American Samoa is the only inhabited US territory in the southern hemisphere, seven islands and atolls with about 45,000 people, and the only one where the indigenous system of matai chiefly titles and communal land ownership was preserved intact under US administration. Around 90% of the land is held communally and cannot be sold — a legal arrangement that has kept the islands looking very different from Guam or Hawaii.
Pago Pago harbour is a drowned volcanic crater with Rainmaker Mountain rising straight out of it, one of the more dramatic natural harbours anywhere. The National Park of American Samoa spreads across three islands — rainforest, cliffs, coral reef and flying foxes — and is the least-visited national park in the US system. Ofu Beach in the Manu'a group is regularly described as one of the most beautiful in the world and has almost nobody on it, because getting there is genuinely difficult.

Getting there
Pago Pago is served by Hawaiian Airlines from Honolulu twice a week, and Talofa Airways and Samoa Airways from Apia. The Honolulu leg means US entry requirements even though American Samoa itself does not.
Getting around
The aiga buses — brightly painted, privately owned and stopping anywhere — cover Tutuila cheaply. Hire cars are available. Small aircraft reach the Manu'a Islands; boats do not run reliably.

Safety
Very safe. Village protocols matter — ask before entering, do not walk through during the evening sa prayer, and dress modestly away from the beach. Currents on the exposed coasts are strong.

Do I need a US visa?
No — and this is the unusual part. American Samoa is outside the US immigration zone and administers its own entry. US ESTA does not apply. Visa-waiver nationals and many others enter for 30 days on an entry permit; some need to apply in advance. But if your route goes through Honolulu, that leg is US territory and does need ESTA or a US visa.
How do I get to the Manu'a Islands?
Small aircraft from Pago Pago to Ofu and Ta'ū, on a schedule that changes and cancels. There is minimal accommodation on Ofu — a handful of rooms — and no restaurant, so bring food. It is the least accessible part of an already remote territory and that is precisely why the beach is empty.
American Samoa or Samoa?
Different countries with the same culture. Independent Samoa is larger, cheaper, has more infrastructure and drives on the left. American Samoa uses the US dollar, drives on the right, and is a day behind despite being 130 kilometres away across the date line. Flights connect them in half an hour.
