The only country in all four hemispheres, and the first to see each new day.

Kiribati straddles the equator and the 180th meridian, which makes it the only country in all four hemispheres, and in 1995 it moved the date line east so the whole country shares one day — meaning Kiritimati is the first inhabited place on earth to enter each new year. Thirty-three atolls and reef islands are spread across 3.5 million square kilometres of ocean with a total land area of 811 square kilometres.

Tarawa, the capital atoll, was the site of a brutal three-day battle in 1943 and is now densely crowded, with South Tarawa holding half the population on a thin ribbon of coral. Kiritimati — Christmas Island, the largest coral atoll in the world — is the draw for anglers: the flats produce bonefishing that specialists rank at the top globally. Like Tuvalu and the Marshalls, the country is only a couple of metres above sea level and its future is an active political question.

Highlights

01

Kiritimati bonefishing

The largest coral atoll in the world, with vast wadeable flats producing bonefish, giant trevally and triggerfish. Specialist anglers rate it among the best saltwater fly destinations anywhere, and it is why most visitors come.

02

Tarawa battlefield

Betio holds Japanese coastal guns, bunkers and the remains of the 1943 battle in which around 6,000 people died in three days. Some of the wrecks are visible on the reef flat at low tide.

03

The Phoenix Islands

A UNESCO-listed marine protected area covering 400,000 square kilometres — one of the largest and least-disturbed coral archipelagos on earth, reachable only by expedition vessel.

04

The line of the new day

The 1995 date line shift means Kiritimati is the first inhabited place on earth to see each sunrise and each new year — a matter of real national pride and an odd thing to stand in.

Regions to know

South Tarawa

The capital ribbon — Bairiki, Betio's battlefield, the causeways and half the country's population.

North Tarawa and the Gilberts

Quieter atolls a short boat ride from the capital, plus Abaiang, Butaritari and Marakei further out.

Kiritimati

The largest coral atoll on earth — bonefishing flats, seabird colonies and a British and US nuclear test history.

The Line Islands

Tabuaeran and Teraina alongside Kiritimati, thousands of kilometres east of the capital.

The Phoenix Islands

A vast UNESCO marine protected area with almost no permanent population, reachable only by expedition ship.

Practical guide

Getting there

Bonriki International on Tarawa is served by Fiji Airways, Nauru Airlines and Solomon Airlines from Nadi and Brisbane. Cassidy International on Kiritimati has separate, sparse service. Schedules change frequently.

Getting around

Air Kiribati flies a limited domestic network with frequent disruption; a government ship serves outer islands irregularly. On South Tarawa, shared minibuses run the length of the atoll cheaply.

Money & costs

Australian dollar. Cash dominates; ATMs on Tarawa are limited and often out of service for foreign cards. Cards are barely accepted. Bring Australian dollars in cash for the whole trip.

Safety

Low crime, though petty theft occurs on South Tarawa. The real risks are logistical — flight cancellations, limited medical care, and water and sanitation conditions on the capital atoll. Unexploded ordnance remains on Betio.

Health

No malaria. Dengue outbreaks occur. Water on South Tarawa is not safe to drink untreated and sanitation is poor in places. Medical facilities are very limited; evacuation to Fiji or Australia for anything serious, and insurance must cover it.

SIM & internet

ATHKL and Vodafone Kiribati; SIMs on Tarawa. A submarine cable landed in 2022 and improved bandwidth substantially in the capital. The outer islands have little or nothing.

South Tarawa has a single road along the atoll with a low limit and constant pedestrian traffic, and the shared minibuses stop anywhere. Very few visitors drive themselves.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get there?

Tarawa is served by Fiji Airways from Nadi, Nauru Airlines from Brisbane and Nadi, and Solomon Airlines. Kiritimati is reached separately by Fiji Airways from Nadi or, historically, from Honolulu — schedules are thin and have changed repeatedly. Combining Tarawa and Kiritimati usually means going out through Fiji and back.

What is South Tarawa like?

Densely populated and under strain — around 60,000 people on a strip of coral a few hundred metres wide, with pressure on water, sanitation and waste. It is not a beach destination and visitors should not expect one. The outer islands are a completely different experience.

What about the sea level?

It is the defining issue. Kiribati averages about two metres above sea level; king tides already flood parts of South Tarawa, groundwater is salinising, and the government purchased land in Fiji in 2014 partly as a contingency. Raising it with people you meet is normal — they raise it themselves.
