New Caledonia's barrier reef encloses a lagoon of about 24,000 square kilometres — the largest in the world — UNESCO-listed, with dugongs, turtles and reef systems in good condition. The main island, Grande Terre, is long and narrow with a mountainous spine, red nickel-mining soils in the south and a dry west coast where cattle stations look more Australian than Pacific.
It is a French sui generis collectivity where the indigenous Kanak make up around 40% of the population, and the independence question has driven three referendums and, in May 2024, serious unrest that caused deaths, destroyed businesses and closed the airport for weeks. The situation has calmed but remains politically live, and visitors should read current advice. What draws them is the lagoon, the Isle of Pines, Kanak culture at the Tjibaou Centre, and Nouméa's unusual combination of French food and Pacific setting.

Practical guide
Getting there
La Tontouta, 45 kilometres from Nouméa, is served by Aircalin, Qantas, Air New Zealand and Air France via Tokyo or Osaka, with regional links to Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland, Nadi and Port Vila.
Getting around
A hire car is the practical option on Grande Terre, where roads are good. Air Calédonie flies to the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands, and the Betico ferry serves them more slowly. Buses cover the main routes cheaply.

What is the current situation after the 2024 unrest?
The May 2024 riots followed a disputed change to voter eligibility, caused deaths and extensive damage in Nouméa, and closed the international airport for several weeks. Order was restored but the underlying political question is unresolved and tension recurs. Check your government's advisory shortly before travelling and again before departure, and avoid demonstrations and roadblocks entirely.
How does the entry regime work?
New Caledonia is a French collectivity outside the EU and outside Schengen. EU/EEA and Swiss nationals enter freely; UK, US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Japanese passports get 90 days visa-free. A standard Schengen visa is not valid — a visa endorsed for New Caledonia is required for visa nationals.
What should I know about visiting Kanak areas?
On tribal land, the coutume applies — a small gift, traditionally cloth and a note, offered to the chief or host on arrival, which formalises your presence. Ask before photographing people or sacred sites, and never enter a tribal area or camp on it without permission. Guides and gîtes arrange the protocol.
