North Korea appears on this site for completeness and for honesty, not as a suggestion. Foreign ministries advise against all travel; the US bars its citizens from entering without a special validation passport, following the death of Otto Warmbier in 2017. Tourism operated through a small number of licensed agencies before 2020, closed entirely for the pandemic, and has reopened only in narrow and repeatedly reversed steps.
What a visit is, when it is possible, is a guided itinerary with two minders, a fixed route, and no unaccompanied movement. Photography is restricted and inspected. Your guides are responsible to the state for what you do, which places them at risk as well as you. Every euro spent goes to a state tourism apparatus. Anyone considering it should understand that the constraints are not obstacles to work around — they are the product itself.
Highlights
Pyongyang
The showpiece capital — Kim Il Sung Square, the Juche Tower, the metro's chandeliered deep stations. Everything you see is chosen for you, which is itself the point of interest.
The DMZ from the north side
Panmunjom viewed from the opposite direction to the standard Seoul day trip, with the narrative reversed. One of the few places on earth that can be visited from both sides of a line.
Mount Kumgang and Myohyangsan
Genuinely beautiful mountain scenery, with the International Friendship Exhibition at Myohyangsan — vast halls of gifts to the leadership, cut into a mountainside.
The Mass Games
A stadium spectacle of tens of thousands of synchronised performers, staged in some years and not others. Extraordinary as production and inseparable from what it exists to project.

- Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
- Health
- Routine vaccinations plus hepatitis A and typhoid. Medical facilities are very limited and evacuation options are constrained by both geography and politics — the practical route out is Beijing, and it is not quick. Standard travel insurance almost certainly excludes travel against a government advisory, which is what is in force. Do not drink tap water.
- Money
- Foreign visitors use euros, Chinese yuan or US dollars in cash — the local won is not available to them. There are no functioning international cards or ATMs. Bring all the cash you will need. Shops for foreigners are separate from those for residents.

There is no ordinary market here. Prices are set by a small number of licensed operators working with a state monopoly, and the practical variable is not season but whether tours are running at all. Practical guide
Getting there
Air Koryo from Beijing and Vladivostok, or the Beijing–Pyongyang train, and only as part of a booked tour with a visa arranged by the operator. There is no independent arrival. Routes and frequencies have been unstable since 2020.
Getting around
By tour bus, on the itinerary approved for your group, with guides. There is no public transport access for visitors beyond the Pyongyang metro stations included in the tour. Internal flights and the rail network are not open to independent use.

Safety
The physical risk of street crime is negligible; the risk is legal and political. Arbitrary detention of foreign nationals has occurred, sentences have been severe, and consular assistance is minimal to nonexistent for most nationalities — several countries have no embassy at all. Actions that would be trivial elsewhere, including tearing a newspaper or photographing the wrong building, have led to detention. Sanctions law in your home country may also restrict what you can bring or pay for.

SIM & internet
Foreign mobile phones cannot use local networks in the ordinary way; a foreigner SIM with international data exists at high cost. There is no access to the global internet for residents, and visitor access is limited and monitored. Assume no privacy in any communication. Devices may be inspected on entry and exit.
Driving
Roads outside Pyongyang carry very little traffic and are in poor condition. All visitor movement is by the tour vehicle on the approved route.

Can I actually go right now?
Possibly not, and it changes. The country closed completely in early 2020 and has reopened in narrow, partial and sometimes reversed steps since 2024, at times admitting only certain nationalities or only to specific regions. Any plan depends on the state of access in that particular month, and on your own government's rules — US passports are invalid for travel to the DPRK without a special validation.
What are the actual rules once inside?
You travel with two government guides at all times, follow a pre-approved itinerary, and do not leave the hotel unaccompanied. Photography is restricted — no military, no construction, no unposed street photography, and images are checked on departure. Showing disrespect toward images of the leadership, including folding a newspaper carrying one, is treated as a serious offence. Detentions of foreign visitors have occurred and consular access is minimal.
Is there an ethical argument for going?
There are arguments on both sides and it is worth knowing them. Supporters say contact with outsiders matters and that guides and drivers benefit. Critics point out that revenue flows to a state that runs a documented network of political prison camps, that itineraries are propaganda by design, and that visitors have been used as bargaining assets. This site does not tell you which weighs more — but it will not pretend the question is not there.
