South Georgia is a 170-kilometre spine of glaciated mountains in the Southern Ocean, with no permanent population beyond the small government and museum team at Grytviken and researchers at King Edward Point. It holds what is probably the densest concentration of large wildlife anywhere: king penguin colonies of a hundred thousand or more at St Andrews Bay and Salisbury Plain, several million fur seals, elephant seals hauled out in ranks, and albatross colonies on the outlying islands.
It is also where Shackleton's Endurance expedition ended — the open-boat voyage from Elephant Island, the traverse of the island's unmapped interior, and the whaling station at Stromness. He is buried at Grytviken and expedition passengers still toast him at the grave. An eradication programme completed in 2018 removed the rats and mice introduced by sealers, and the songbirds have come back. Access is by expedition ship only, usually as part of a Falklands–South Georgia–Antarctica voyage.
Highlights
St Andrews Bay
The largest king penguin colony on the island — well over a hundred thousand birds on a glacial outwash plain, with elephant seals along the beach in front of them. Landings depend entirely on the surf.
Grytviken
A restored whaling station with a museum, a church and Shackleton's grave in the small cemetery. The only place on the island with a shop and a post office, and the administrative centre.
Salisbury Plain and Gold Harbour
Two more vast king colonies with fur seals crowding the beaches and glaciers behind — Gold Harbour is often the most photographed landing of an entire voyage.
The Shackleton crossing
The final section of the 1916 traverse from Fortuna Bay to Stromness, walked by fit passengers on some voyages — about six kilometres over a saddle, ending above the ruined whaling station.

Practical guide
Getting there
Expedition ships from Ushuaia or Stanley, usually on a Falklands–South Georgia–Antarctica itinerary of 18 to 22 days. There is no commercial air access and no independent way to arrive.
Getting around
Zodiacs from the ship. Ashore, movement is on foot with guides, and most landings are on beaches crowded with fur seals — which are aggressive in the breeding season and require care.

Safety
Fur seals in the December–January breeding season will charge, and bites are the most common visitor injury. Elephant seals are enormous and unpredictable when disturbed. Weather changes fast and landings are abandoned without warning.

How do I get there?
By expedition ship, almost always on a longer voyage taking in the Falklands and the Antarctic Peninsula, sailing from Ushuaia or Stanley. There is no airstrip for visitors and no independent access. Expect 18 to 22 days and a price well above a Peninsula-only trip.
What is the biosecurity regime?
The strictest anywhere. Before every landing, all clothing, bags, boots, tripods and velcro must be vacuumed and inspected for seeds, and boots washed and disinfected. Ships hold formal biosecurity briefings and inspections. The rat eradication that succeeded in 2018 could be undone by one pregnant rodent coming ashore.
How likely is a landing to be cancelled?
Quite likely, for some sites. South Georgia is exposed to Southern Ocean swell and katabatic winds, and captains cancel landings routinely. A good voyage builds in alternatives, and any operator promising specific beaches on specific days is overselling.
