A motorway vignette is mandatory - a 10-day sticker costs around €12 and is sold at petrol stations near the border, or bought digitally. Several Alpine tunnels and passes charge separate tolls on top.

Not mandatory by day, though required in tunnels.

Winter tyres are legally required from November to mid-April in wintry conditions, and rental cars in the Alpine provinces are fitted with them. Some mountain passes close entirely in winter - check before planning a route over one.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
