Driving in Belarus

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

60 / 90 / 120 km/h · 37 / 56 / 75 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Required · Vienna 1968

An IDP is required, and most EU rental agreements exclude Belarus entirely.

Blood alcohol limit

0.03%

Tolls

An electronic toll system (BelToll) applies to foreign vehicles on main roads, with an on-board unit required and fines for non-compliance.

Headlights

Mandatory outside built-up areas at all times.

Child seats

Required for children under 12.

The BelToll unit must be collected at the border or a service point before using the main roads; driving without one generates substantial fines. Roads are good and traffic policing is strict. Border-zone areas near Ukraine have restricted access.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
