Driving in Croatia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 90 / 130 km/h · 31 / 56 / 81 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU and UK licences are valid; non-EU licences require an IDP alongside.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% (0.00% for drivers under 24)

Tolls

Tolled motorways with booths - Zagreb to Split costs around €25. The Pelješac bridge, open since 2022, removed the old Bosnian corridor crossing.

Headlights

Mandatory during daylight from late October to late March.

Child seats

Mandatory under 135 cm.

The Pelješac bridge means driving from Split to Dubrovnik no longer crosses Bosnian territory, which used to mean two extra border checks - a significant improvement now that Bosnia is an external Schengen border. Coastal roads are narrow and busy in summer, and island car ferries need booking.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
