The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Recommended
A home-country licence is accepted for the length of a tourist stay (up to 90 days); an IDP smooths police checks and rental paperwork.
0.05 % - checkpoints are frequent and breathalysers used, especially weekend nights
No toll roads.
Required at night and in rain; no daytime running requirement.
Children under 12 belong in the back seat; child-restraint rules exist but enforcement is loose - bring your own seat for small children.
Road quality is the best in the CA-4 - the coastal highway (CA-2) and the Pan-American are fast and well surfaced. Police checkpoints are routine and polite; hand over licence and passport, expect two minutes, never offer money.
