50 / 90 / 130 km/h · 31 / 56 / 81 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU and UK licences are valid; non-EU licences legally require an IDP alongside, and rental desks enforce it.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% (0.02% for drivers with under two years of licence)

Tolls

Tolled motorways on the mainland with booths - Athens to Thessaloniki costs around €30.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

Mandatory under 135 cm.

Island roads are often narrow, unfenced and steep, and the small scooters rented everywhere are underpowered for them. Renting a quad or scooter without the correct licence category is the single most common insurance failure in Greece. Ferry car bookings sell out in August.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
