Driving in Italy

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 90 / 130 km/h · 31 / 56 / 81 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended · Both accepted

EU licences are fine as they are. Non-EU licences legally require an IDP alongside, and rental desks and police do ask.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% (0.00% for drivers under 21 or with under three years of licence)

Tolls

Extensive tolled autostrade - take a ticket, pay at the exit. Telepass lanes are for subscribers only and using one by mistake is a fine.

Headlights

Low beams mandatory at all times outside built-up areas.

Child seats

Mandatory under 150 cm or 12 years; rentals stock them.

The ZTL zones are the thing to understand before you turn a key here - camera-enforced restricted centres in nearly every historic town, with fines that arrive months later. Mountain roads in the Dolomites and on the Amalfi coast are narrow and busy; the Amalfi coast in particular is not a relaxing drive in season.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
