Driving in Kazakhstan

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

60 / 90 / 110 km/h · 37 / 56 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Required · Vienna 1968

An IDP with your home licence is required; rental agencies check it and traffic police do too.

Blood alcohol limit

0.00% - zero tolerance, enforced with roadside checks

Tolls

Tolls on some newer highway sections including parts of the Almaty–Astana route.

Headlights

Low beams mandatory outside built-up areas at all times.

Child seats

Required under age 12; rentals stock them on request.

Main roads between cities have improved a great deal; secondary roads have not. Distances are the real issue - 500 km between fuel stops is normal in the west. Livestock on unfenced roads is a constant hazard at dusk.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
