Driving in Mongolia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

60 / 80 / 100 km/h · 37 / 50 / 62 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Required · Vienna 1968

An IDP is required. Self-drive rental exists but insurance for off-road travel is limited and recovery is your own problem.

Blood alcohol limit

0.00% - absolute zero tolerance

Tolls

Small tolls on a few paved sections out of Ulaanbaatar.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

No effective requirement or rental stock.

Outside the paved corridors there are no roads, only tracks that fork and rejoin - navigation is by GPS and local knowledge, which is what the driver is for. Carry spare fuel, water and a satellite communicator if you go without one.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
