Driving in Namibia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

60 / 100 / 120 km/h · 37 / 62 / 75 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

An English-language licence is accepted; other licences need an IDP alongside.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05%

Tolls

None.

Headlights

Not required by day, though widely used on gravel for visibility in dust.

Child seats

No effective requirement; rental companies can supply.

Gravel is the defining hazard. The posted 100 km/h on gravel is a limit, not a target - 80 is the sensible maximum and every rental company will tell you so, because rollovers are what they see. Tyre damage is common; know how to change a wheel and check you have two spares on remote routes. Never drive at night.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
