Recommended
EU licences are accepted for tourist stays, but police at checkpoints and rental desks respond better to an IDP alongside the passport.
0.05% (0.5 g/L); zero tolerance for professional drivers
Cash toll booths (peajes) along the Panamericana and major intercity routes - keep soles handy; no vignette.
Low beams required on intercity highways day and night; urban daytime use optional.
Children under 12 must ride in the back seat; child restraints required for the youngest but enforcement is inconsistent - bring your own seat.
City limits drop to 40 km/h on ordinary streets (60 on avenues). Mountain roads are slow and lightly guard-railed - plan a 40–50 km/h real average in the sierra and avoid night driving.
