Driving in Saint Kitts and Nevis

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

20 / 40 / 40 mph · 32 / 64 / 64 km/h

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

An IDP alone is not the document that matters: visitors must buy a temporary local driving permit (around EC$62.50 / ~€20), issued on the spot by rental companies or the Traffic Department against your home licence.

Blood alcohol limit

No routine breath testing - driving under the influence is an offence; treat as zero

Tolls

None

Headlights

At night; sound the horn on blind bends as locals do

Child seats

No effectively enforced requirement - request a seat from the rental desk

Drive on the left. One main road rings each island; limits are low, rarely posted and largely self-enforcing given the bends. Goats and monkeys on the road are the real hazard, and fuel stations close early on Nevis.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
