Driving in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

20 / 40 / 40 mph · 32 / 64 / 64 km/h

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

An IDP alone is not sufficient: visitors must buy a temporary local driving permit (around EC$100 / ~€32), issued against your home licence at the licensing office in Kingstown or arranged through rental agencies.

Blood alcohol limit

No routine breath testing - driving under the influence is an offence; treat as zero

Tolls

None

Headlights

At night; sound the horn on blind bends as locals do

Child seats

No effectively enforced requirement - bring or request a seat

Drive on the left. St Vincent’s leeward road is narrow with sheer drops and hairpins; limits are low, rarely posted and academic on these roads. In the Grenadines you mostly won’t need a car at all - ferries, feet and water taxis do the work.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
