Driving in Spain

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 90 / 120 km/h · 31 / 56 / 75 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU and UK licences are valid as they are; non-EU licences legally require an IDP alongside and rental desks ask for it.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% (0.03% for drivers with under two years of licence)

Tolls

Many former toll motorways became free between 2018 and 2021; the remaining AP routes still charge. Free A-roads usually parallel them.

Headlights

Not required by day; mandatory in tunnels.

Child seats

Mandatory under 135 cm, and children under that height must sit in the rear.

Low-emission zones (ZBE) are now mandatory in every city over 50,000 people, with camera enforcement and varying rules - check the specific city before driving into a centre. Otherwise Spanish roads are excellent and the motorway network is one of the best in Europe.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
