Driving in Suriname

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

40 / 80 / 80 km/h · 25 / 50 / 50 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended

Rental agencies accept EU licences, but police checks go smoother with an IDP; carry both plus your passport.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% commonly cited; checks are rare outside Paramaribo - treat it as don’t-drink-and-drive

Tolls

No toll roads; the only regular payments are vehicle ferries on river crossings.

Headlights

Low beams recommended by day on the open east–west road; mandatory at night and in rain.

Child seats

No meaningfully enforced child-restraint regime - bring your own seat and insist the rental fits it.

Suriname drives on the LEFT - one of only two countries on the continent (with Guyana). There are no motorways; the 80 km/h figure is the open-road limit. Watch for unmarked speed bumps and wandering dogs at village edges.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
