Driving in Switzerland

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 80 / 120 km/h · 31 / 50 / 75 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU, UK and US licences are valid for visits; an IDP is only required for licences not in the Latin alphabet.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% (0.01% for new drivers and professionals)

Tolls

No per-journey tolls, but a motorway vignette is mandatory - an annual sticker or its e-vignette equivalent, about €40, and driving the motorway without one is a substantial fine. Rentals normally have it; confirm.

Headlights

Low beams mandatory at all times, day and night.

Child seats

Mandatory under 150 cm or 12 years.

Speed enforcement is severe and fines are income-scaled at the top end - this is a country where a serious speeding offence can cost five figures. Several resort villages are car-free, reached only by train or cable car, which is worth knowing before you book a hire car.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
