Driving in Taiwan

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 70 / 110 km/h · 31 / 43 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Required · Both accepted

An IDP must be validated at a local motor vehicles office for stays beyond 30 days; for shorter visits it is accepted alongside your home licence. A car licence does not cover a scooter over 50 cc, which is what most rental shops hand you.

Blood alcohol limit

0.015% - effectively zero tolerance, with heavy penalties

Tolls

Electronic tolling on the national freeways via eTag; rentals include it and bill you afterwards.

Headlights

Motorcycles must run headlights at all times.

Child seats

Mandatory under age four; rentals stock them on request.

City traffic is dense and scooters flow around cars in ways that take getting used to. The cross-island highways over the central range are spectacular and subject to landslide closures - check the road status before committing to one.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
