The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

50 / 80 / 100 km/h · 31 / 50 / 62 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Required · Both accepted

An IDP is required. Self-drive safaris are legal but uncommon and demand a proper 4WD and recovery equipment.

Blood alcohol limit

0.08%

Tolls

None of consequence.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

No effective requirement; operators can usually provide.

Park roads require high clearance and 4WD in the wet season, and the transfer roads between northern parks are corrugated and slow. Most visitors travel with a driver-guide, which is both the norm and much the better experience. Night driving between towns is dangerous.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
