Speed limits

48 / 96 / 112 km/h · 30 / 60 / 70 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU, US and most other licences are valid for up to 12 months; an IDP is only needed for licences not in the Latin alphabet.

Blood alcohol limit

0.08% in England, Wales and Northern Ireland · 0.05% in Scotland

Tolls

Very few - the M6 Toll, the Dartford Crossing and a handful of bridges. London's Congestion Charge and ULEZ are separate daily charges that must be paid online.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

Required until 135 cm or age 12; rentals stock them.

Speed limits are posted in miles per hour - the metric figures here are conversions of 30, 60 and 70 mph. Rural lanes in Cornwall, Wales and the Highlands are single-track with passing places, and the etiquette is not optional. London driving means the Congestion Charge and ULEZ daily, paid online or fined.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
