Driving in Zambia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

50 / 100 / 120 km/h · 31 / 62 / 75 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended · Geneva 1949

English-language licences are accepted for short visits; an IDP simplifies police stops and rentals.

Blood alcohol limit

0.08% (0.8 g/l)

Tolls

Toll gates on the main trunk roads; small cash amounts, and foreign-registered vehicles pay more.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

Not enforced; bring your own.

Left-hand traffic. Police checkpoints are frequent and usually routine - carry licence, IDP, insurance and vehicle papers. Fuel stations thin out badly in the parks and the west; carry jerrycans on long legs.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
