Afghanistan is documented here for the same reason the site documents Myanmar and North Korea: silence is not safety. Journalists, aid workers, researchers, dual nationals visiting family and a small number of independent travellers do enter the country, and they are better served by accurate information than by a blank page. Nothing on this page should be read as encouragement.
The position as it stands: foreign ministries advise against all travel. There is no effective consular assistance for most nationalities, commercial evacuation is unavailable, and the risk of arbitrary detention, kidnapping and attacks by armed groups is high and documented. Restrictions on women — on movement without a male relative, on employment, on education beyond primary level — are severe and apply to foreign women in ways that shape any visit. Landmine and unexploded-ordnance contamination is among the worst in the world.
Highlights
Band-e-Amir
Afghanistan's first national park — six deep blue lakes dammed by natural travertine walls in the Hazarajat highlands. Extraordinary, and in 2023 women were barred from visiting.
The Bamiyan valley
The empty niches where the sixth-century Buddhas stood until their destruction in 2001, with surviving cave paintings and the Shahr-e-Zohak citadel above the valley.

A 65-metre twelfth-century tower of intricate brickwork in a remote Ghor river gorge — a UNESCO site listed as in danger, and extremely difficult to reach.

- Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus, rabies and polio are standard; polio remains endemic. Malaria risk in the lowlands in season. Healthcare has deteriorated severely since 2021, with drug shortages and a depleted medical workforce. There is no reliable evacuation infrastructure. Do not drink tap water. Anyone travelling needs their own comprehensive medical kit and the knowledge to use it.

- Cash only, in afghanis and US dollars. The banking system has been largely severed from the international one since 2021 — foreign cards do not work, ATMs are unreliable, and international transfers are heavily constrained. Bring all funds in cash, in clean US notes, and expect to change them through money-market dealers.

Practical guide
Getting there
Kabul (KBL) is served by a small number of regional carriers from Dubai, Islamabad, Istanbul and a few Central Asian cities; schedules change without notice. Overland from Pakistan (Torkham, Chaman) and Iran (Islam Qala) is used, with border closures common. A visa must be obtained in advance from an Afghan mission.
Getting around
Domestic flights link Kabul with Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and Kandahar irregularly. Roads between cities are functional but checkpoints are frequent and run by different actors; overland travel is generally arranged with a local fixer. Independent movement is not realistic for most visitors, and some routes are unsafe at any time of day.

This is the whole page. Armed attacks, kidnapping for ransom and arbitrary detention of foreigners are documented and ongoing. Landmine and UXO contamination is among the worst in the world and kills civilians every month — never leave hard-surfaced roads or marked paths. There is no consular assistance for most nationalities; several countries have no diplomatic presence at all. Local security conditions vary by province and change quickly, and a fixer's judgement is worth more than any published assessment.

SIM & internet
Mobile networks function in the cities and along main roads; internet is available but filtered, and shutdowns have been used. Assume communications are monitored. Satellite communications equipment may attract serious attention at checkpoints and should not be carried casually.
Driving
The ring road connecting the main cities is in variable condition and passes through areas with very different security pictures. Roadside mine contamination makes leaving the paved surface genuinely dangerous, including to pull over.

Can foreigners actually enter?
Visas are being issued by Afghan missions abroad, and a small tourism sector operates with local fixers. Entry is therefore possible in the administrative sense. Whether it is advisable is a separate question, and every foreign ministry answers it the same way. Anyone considering it should speak to their own ministry, understand that there will be no consular rescue, and price specialist insurance accordingly.
What are the rules for women visitors?
Restrictive and enforced. Women are required to cover their hair and body in public and face restrictions on travelling without a male relative; access to some sites, including Band-e-Amir national park, has been closed to women. Foreign women have been affected by these rules in practice, not exempted from them. Any woman considering travel should get current, specific advice rather than relying on older accounts.
Will my insurance cover me?
A standard policy will not. Every mainstream insurer voids cover for travel against a government advisory, and an all-travel advisory is in force. Specialist high-risk cover exists, costs several hundred euros a week and still may exclude a great deal. Medical evacuation from Afghanistan is a six-figure operation and cannot be assumed to be available at any price.
