Burkina Faso renamed itself in 1984 under Thomas Sankara — "the land of upright people" — during four years that remain a reference point for African political thought. Ouagadougou hosts FESPACO, the Pan-African film festival, every two years, the largest cinema event on the continent. The bronze casters of Ouaga and the bogolan mud-cloth workshops are among the best craft traditions in West Africa.
Since 2015 jihadist insurgency has spread from the north and east across most of the territory, two coups took place in 2022, and a large share of the country is outside government control. Most governments advise against all travel to all or nearly all of it. The southwest around Banfora — the Sindou peaks, the Karfiguéla falls, the Domes of Fabédougou — was long the tourist heartland and is now also affected. FESPACO
The Pan-African Film and Television Festival, held in Ouagadougou every two years since 1969 — the largest African cinema event anywhere, with the Étalon de Yennenga as its top prize.
The Sindou Peaks
A ridge of eroded sandstone fins near Banfora in the southwest, walked in an hour or two, with Senufo villages in the surrounding country.

Cascades below sugarcane country, the Domes of Fabédougou's weathered limestone, and Lake Tengrela with its hippos.
Ouagadougou craft traditions
The bronze casters' village, the Village Artisanal and the bogolan mud-cloth workshops — some of the strongest craft output in the region.

Getting there
Ouagadougou airport is served by Air France, Brussels Airlines, Turkish, Royal Air Maroc, Ethiopian and ASKY. Land borders with Ghana, Togo, Benin and Côte d'Ivoire are open but the approach roads carry advisories.
Getting around
Coaches connect Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso and Banfora on the paved southwest corridor. Beyond that, road travel carries serious risk. Green motorbikes and taxis do local transport in the capital.

How much of the country is affected?
Most of it. Insurgent activity affects the Sahel, North, East, Boucle du Mouhoun, Centre-Nord and increasingly the Cascades and Hauts-Bassins regions in the southwest. Governments variously advise against all travel to the whole country or to everything outside Ouagadougou. The picture has deteriorated rather than improved since 2020.
Does FESPACO still run?
Yes — it has continued through the security crisis, with heavy protection around venues. It remains the reason a significant number of foreign visitors come to Ouagadougou. Attendance is arranged through accredited channels and the festival organisation.
What is the situation with ECOWAS?
Burkina Faso announced withdrawal from ECOWAS alongside Mali and Niger, forming the Alliance of Sahel States. What that means in practice for free movement, trade and visa arrangements is still unsettled. Do not assume ECOWAS rules apply; check at the time of travel.
