“The "land of upright people" - a film festival, bronze casting, and an insurgency across most of it.”

Burkina Faso renamed itself in 1984 under Thomas Sankara - "the land of upright people" - during four years that remain a reference point for African political thought. Ouagadougou hosts FESPACO, the Pan-African film festival, every two years, the largest cinema event on the continent. The bronze casters of Ouaga and the bogolan mud-cloth workshops are among the best craft traditions in West Africa.

Since 2015 jihadist insurgency has spread from the north and east across most of the territory, two coups took place in 2022, and a large share of the country is outside government control. Most governments advise against all travel to all or nearly all of it. The southwest around Banfora - the Sindou peaks, the Karfiguéla falls, the Domes of Fabédougou - was long the tourist heartland and is now also affected. Read the current advisory before anything else.

What changed

15 Aug 2026 - Visa on arrival → e-VisaTracked, not yet verified

The first thing to know about entering Burkina Faso is not the visa. Foreign ministries advise against all or nearly all travel to the country: armed groups hold or contest large areas of the Sahel, North and East regions and increasingly the southwest, foreigners have been kidnapped, and attacks have reached Ouagadougou. That advice invalidates most ordinary travel insurance and thins consular assistance to almost nothing, and it is the condition under which everything below should be read. A United States passport needs a visa, obtained before travel. The official route is the government's own online system, with a mission or consulate as the alternative and, for a limited set of nationalities - principally those from countries where Burkina Faso has no mission - a visa issued on arrival at Ouagadougou at a noticeably higher fee. Do not plan on that counter unless a Burkinabè mission has confirmed in writing that your passport qualifies. Expect to supply a yellow fever certificate, an invitation or hotel booking, a return ticket and proof of funds. The figure stored here is an approximation rather than a schedule: fees are quoted in CFA francs, differ by category and route, and the on-arrival option costs substantially more than the advance one. A yellow fever certificate is a condition of entry to Burkina Faso for every arriving traveller, not only for those coming from an affected country, and it is checked at the airline gate as often as at the border. The vaccine does not count until ten days after it is given, so this is the item to deal with first and not last; a certificate that is missing at check-in cannot be fixed at check-in, and at the border the choice is being vaccinated there at your own cost or being turned round. Burkina Faso has announced its withdrawal from ECOWAS alongside Mali and Niger, which is exactly the arrangement regional free movement rests on; what a West African passport is entitled to here, and what a Burkinabè visa is worth at a neighbour's border, are both live questions at the time of writing and should be confirmed close to the date rather than from any older account, this one included. Carry six months of passport validity and several photocopies of the passport and visa: checkpoints are frequent and documents are inspected at them.

Practical guide

Getting there

Ouagadougou airport is served by Air France, Brussels Airlines, Turkish, Royal Air Maroc, Ethiopian and ASKY. Land borders with Ghana, Togo, Benin and Côte d'Ivoire are open but the approach roads carry advisories.

Getting around

Coaches connect Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso and Banfora on the paved southwest corridor. Beyond that, road travel carries serious risk. Green motorbikes and taxis do local transport in the capital.

Money & costs

CFA franc, pegged to the euro. Cash dominates; ATMs work in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. Cards at a handful of hotels only.

Safety

Armed groups control substantial territory; kidnapping of foreigners has occurred; improvised explosive devices are used on rural roads. Attacks have reached Ouagadougou. Consular capacity is limited. Check advisories immediately before any movement.

Health

Yellow fever certificate compulsory for entry. Malaria year-round nationwide. Meningitis belt - risk in the dry season. Medical facilities are limited; evacuation is complicated by the security situation.

SIM & internet

Orange, Moov and Telecel; SIM registration requires a passport. 4G in Ouagadougou and Bobo. Network restrictions have accompanied political events.

Ouagadougou is dominated by mopeds and is chaotic but navigable. Rural road travel is the primary security risk in the country - improvised devices and ambushes have targeted vehicles on unpaved routes.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

How much of the country is affected?

Most of it. Insurgent activity affects the Sahel, North, East, Boucle du Mouhoun, Centre-Nord and increasingly the Cascades and Hauts-Bassins regions in the southwest. Governments variously advise against all travel to the whole country or to everything outside Ouagadougou. The picture has deteriorated rather than improved since 2020.

Does FESPACO still run?

Yes - it has continued through the security crisis, with heavy protection around venues. It remains the reason a significant number of foreign visitors come to Ouagadougou. Attendance is arranged through accredited channels and the festival organisation.

What is the situation with ECOWAS?

Burkina Faso announced withdrawal from ECOWAS alongside Mali and Niger, forming the Alliance of Sahel States. What that means in practice for free movement, trade and visa arrangements is still unsettled. Do not assume ECOWAS rules apply; check at the time of travel.
