Côte d'Ivoire produces roughly 40% of the world's cocoa and, after a civil war and a contested election that ended in 2011, has spent the last decade rebuilding into the most economically dynamic country in francophone West Africa. Abidjan sprawls around a lagoon with a genuine skyline, the Plateau district's towers facing Cocody and Treichville, and a nightlife that exports coupé-décalé across the continent.
Inland, Yamoussoukro — the official capital, and the home village of the first president — holds the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, the largest church in the world, built to a scale that is difficult to process in a town of 200,000. Beyond that are the Taï rainforest with chimpanzees that use stone tools, the Man region's waterfalls and liana bridges, and a surfing coast around Assinie and Grand-Bassam.

Basilica of Our Lady of Peace
The largest church in the world by area, consecrated in 1990 in Yamoussoukro, with 7,000 square metres of stained glass and a dome modelled on St Peter's. Almost empty on most days, which makes the scale stranger still.
Grand-Bassam
The UNESCO-listed first colonial capital on a sandbar an hour from Abidjan — crumbling French administrative buildings, a good beach and weekend restaurants.
Taï National Park
The last large block of primary rainforest in West Africa, with chimpanzees observed using stone tools to crack nuts, plus pygmy hippos and forest elephants.
Man and the western highlands
Waterfalls, the Dent de Man peak, villages that build liana suspension bridges over rivers, and mask traditions among the Dan and Wè peoples.

Getting there
Abidjan Félix-Houphouët-Boigny is a growing hub with Air France, Brussels Airlines, Turkish, Emirates, Ethiopian, Royal Air Maroc and Air Côte d'Ivoire's dense regional network. Land borders with Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea and Liberia are open.
Getting around
Comfortable coaches — UTB, and others — link Abidjan with Yamoussoukro, Bouaké, San Pédro and Man on good tarmac. Yango and Uber work in Abidjan alongside orange-and-blue taxis and woro-woro shared cars. The Abidjan–Ouagadougou railway carries passengers slowly.
Money & costs
CFA franc, pegged to the euro. ATMs are plentiful in Abidjan and present in the larger towns; cards work in hotels, malls and mid-range restaurants in the capital. Cash elsewhere.
Safety
Petty theft and occasional armed robbery in Abidjan, worst in Adjamé, Abobo and Yopougon after dark. Northern border zones with Mali and Burkina Faso carry advisories. Coastal rip currents are strong and drownings occur at Assinie and Grand-Bassam.

Is it safe now?
Abidjan, the coast and the main inland routes are calm and have been for years. The northern border areas with Mali and Burkina Faso carry advisories because of Sahelian armed groups, and a 2016 attack at Grand-Bassam is the reason beach resorts still have visible security. Ordinary precautions apply in Abidjan, particularly at night in Adjamé and Abobo.
What is the visa process?
Most nationalities apply through the official e-visa portal before travel and collect the visa on arrival at Abidjan airport — you upload documents and pay online, then present the pre-approval at the counter. ECOWAS nationals enter freely. A yellow fever certificate is compulsory and checked.
When is the rainy season?
The south has two: a heavy one from May to July and a shorter one in October and November. The north has a single wet season from June to October. December to March is dry nationwide and is when to come, though harmattan dust can haze the north in January.
