“The world's largest basilica, Abidjan's skyline and West Africa's comeback story.”

Côte d'Ivoire produces roughly 40% of the world's cocoa and, after a civil war and a contested election that ended in 2011, has spent the last decade rebuilding into the most economically dynamic country in francophone West Africa. Abidjan sprawls around a lagoon with a genuine skyline, the Plateau district's towers facing Cocody and Treichville, and a nightlife that exports coupé-décalé across the continent.

Inland, Yamoussoukro - the official capital, and the home village of the first president - holds the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, the largest church in the world, built to a scale that is difficult to process in a town of 200,000. Beyond that are the Taï rainforest with chimpanzees that use stone tools, the Man region's waterfalls and liana bridges, and a surfing coast around Assinie and Grand-Bassam.

Chapter 01

Highlights

01

Basilica of Our Lady of Peace

The largest church in the world by area, consecrated in 1990 in Yamoussoukro, with 7,000 square metres of stained glass and a dome modelled on St Peter's. Almost empty on most days, which makes the scale stranger still.

02

Grand-Bassam

The UNESCO-listed first colonial capital on a sandbar an hour from Abidjan - crumbling French administrative buildings, a good beach and weekend restaurants.

03

Taï National Park

The last large block of primary rainforest in West Africa, with chimpanzees observed using stone tools to crack nuts, plus pygmy hippos and forest elephants.

04

Man and the western highlands

Waterfalls, the Dent de Man peak, villages that build liana suspension bridges over rivers, and mask traditions among the Dan and Wè peoples.

Côte d'Ivoire's arrangement is easy to describe wrongly, so it is worth describing exactly. A United States passport applies online before travelling, pays the fee - seventy-three euros for a single entry of up to three months - and receives a pre-approval to print. That pre-approval is not the visa. The visa itself is issued at Abidjan on arrival, at a dedicated counter placed before immigration, where your fingerprints and photograph are taken and the sticker goes into the passport. So there is something to do at the border, and there is also something that absolutely must be done before you fly: no airline boards a passenger for Abidjan on the strength of an intention to sort it out at the other end. Apply a week ahead rather than two days; approvals have generally come back within a few days. Allow extra time on arrival for the biometric counter, particularly on the European night arrivals when three widebodies land within the hour. Two limits on the scheme catch people. It is valid for arrival BY AIR AT ABIDJAN and nowhere else - a land crossing from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea or Liberia, or a sea arrival at San Pédro, needs a visa from an Ivorian mission obtained in the ordinary way, so an overland West African itinerary cannot use this route. And the pre-approval is tied to the passport you applied with; a renewal between application and departure means starting again. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is a condition of entry to Côte d'Ivoire for every arriving traveller old enough to be vaccinated - not only for those coming from a country where the disease circulates - and it is checked at the airport beside the passport rather than assumed. The certificate becomes valid ten days after the injection, which makes it the one requirement on this page that cannot be dealt with in the week before you fly; arrange it before you buy anything else, because the visa application asks for it too. Six months of passport validity, and the northern border areas with Mali and Burkina Faso carry advisories worth reading before routing a trip through them.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

Abidjan Félix-Houphouët-Boigny is a growing hub with Air France, Brussels Airlines, Turkish, Emirates, Ethiopian, Royal Air Maroc and Air Côte d'Ivoire's dense regional network. Land borders with Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea and Liberia are open.

Getting around

Comfortable coaches - UTB, and others - link Abidjan with Yamoussoukro, Bouaké, San Pédro and Man on good tarmac. Yango and Uber work in Abidjan alongside orange-and-blue taxis and woro-woro shared cars. The Abidjan–Ouagadougou railway carries passengers slowly.

Money & costs

CFA franc, pegged to the euro. ATMs are plentiful in Abidjan and present in the larger towns; cards work in hotels, malls and mid-range restaurants in the capital. Cash elsewhere.

Safety

Petty theft and occasional armed robbery in Abidjan, worst in Adjamé, Abobo and Yopougon after dark. Northern border zones with Mali and Burkina Faso carry advisories. Coastal rip currents are strong and drownings occur at Assinie and Grand-Bassam.

Health

Yellow fever certificate compulsory for entry. Malaria year-round nationwide. Good private clinics in Abidjan by regional standards. Bottled water.

SIM & internet

Orange, MTN and Moov; SIM registration requires a passport. 4G is good in Abidjan and along the main axes, thinner in the west and north.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe now?

Abidjan, the coast and the main inland routes are calm and have been for years. The northern border areas with Mali and Burkina Faso carry advisories because of Sahelian armed groups, and a 2016 attack at Grand-Bassam is the reason beach resorts still have visible security. Ordinary precautions apply in Abidjan, particularly at night in Adjamé and Abobo.

What is the visa process?

Most nationalities apply through the official e-visa portal before travel and collect the visa on arrival at Abidjan airport - you upload documents and pay online, then present the pre-approval at the counter. ECOWAS nationals enter freely. A yellow fever certificate is compulsory and checked.

When is the rainy season?

The south has two: a heavy one from May to July and a shorter one in October and November. The north has a single wet season from June to October. December to March is dry nationwide and is when to come, though harmattan dust can haze the north in January.
