Rock-hewn churches, a 3,000-year record and the only African country never colonised.
“Rock-hewn churches, a 3,000-year record and the only African country never colonised.”
Ethiopia keeps its own time. The calendar has thirteen months and runs seven or eight years behind the Gregorian one; the clock starts at dawn; the alphabet is Ge'ez; the church is Orthodox and predates most of European Christianity. Lalibela's eleven churches were cut downward out of solid rock in the twelfth century and are still in daily use. Nothing about the country is a version of somewhere else.
It is also difficult travel. Internal conflict has closed regions for extended periods - Tigray, including Axum, has been off-limits at times, and Amhara and Oromia have seen unrest since. Check current advisories carefully and build flexibility into any plan. What is accessible remains extraordinary: the Simien mountains, the Danakil's sulphur fields, the Omo Valley and the coffee forests of Kaffa where the plant originates.
Chapter 01
Highlights
Lalibela
Eleven monolithic churches carved down into the rock in the twelfth century, connected by tunnels and trenches, and still an active pilgrimage site. Go at dawn when white-robed worshippers fill the trenches.
Simien Mountains
Escarpment trekking above 3,000 metres with gelada baboon troops, walia ibex and Ras Dashen at 4,550 metres. Multi-day treks with scout and mules are organised from Debark.
Danakil Depression
One of the hottest places on earth - Dallol's acid springs, salt flats and the Erta Ale lava lake. Only with an organised convoy, and only when the security situation in Afar allows it.
Omo Valley
The southwest, home to Hamar, Mursi, Karo and other peoples with distinct traditions. Visit with an operator who has real relationships there; the photography-for-cash model has done visible damage.

The detail
- Maximum stay
- up to 90 days
- Process
- e-visa
- Fee
- €74 / $80
- Processing time
- Processing takes 1–5 days - apply with room to spare.
- Passport validity
- Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
- Onward travel
- Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
- Health
- Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from an endemic country. Malaria risk below 2,000 metres - Addis and the highlands are largely free of it. Altitude matters: Addis is at 2,400 metres and Simien treks go far higher. Medical facilities outside Addis are basic; carry evacuation insurance.
- Money
- Cash-first. Bring US dollars or euros to change at banks; ATMs work in Addis but are unreliable elsewhere and cap withdrawals low. Card acceptance is limited to top-end hotels. Keep exchange receipts for reconversion at departure.
Ethiopia publishes a visa on arrival at Bole for a long list of nationalities including the United States, and it also runs an e-visa covering the same visit at the same price. Use the e-visa. The arrival counter has been withdrawn and restored more than once, airline staff at check-in have refused boarding to passengers relying on it, and there is nothing to be gained by waiting - approval usually comes back within a day or two and the fee is identical. Apply at the government portal, which is the only official site, and print the approval: the wifi in the arrivals hall is not a plan. The 30-day single-entry tourist visa costs about US$80 and the 90-day roughly two and a half times that, both paid by card when you apply, so decide the length before you start rather than paying twice. The e-visa is written for arrival by air at Addis Ababa; land borders are a separate question and have opened and closed with the security situation, so do not plan an overland entry without confirming both that the crossing is operating and that your visa is valid for it. A yellow fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a country where the disease is endemic, and Ethiopia takes that check seriously at Bole because so many arrivals are connecting from elsewhere in the region.

Chapter 06
Practical guide
Getting there
Addis Ababa Bole is one of Africa's largest hubs, with Ethiopian Airlines flying to most of the continent, Europe, Asia and North America. Ethiopian offers steep domestic-fare discounts to passengers who arrive on its international flights - book the domestic legs through them.
Getting around
Domestic flights are the practical way to cover the historic circuit; the road network is long and slow. Sky Bus and Selam Bus run comfortable inter-city coaches. Addis has a light rail line and abundant minibuses. A driver-guide is standard for the Omo and Danakil.
Money & costs
Cash-first. Bring US dollars or euros to change at banks; ATMs work in Addis but are unreliable elsewhere and cap withdrawals low. Card acceptance is limited to top-end hotels. Keep exchange receipts for reconversion at departure.
Safety
Regional rather than general risk - conflict-affected areas change, and the safe circuit of one year may be closed the next. Petty theft in Addis and Merkato market. Internet and mobile shutdowns have been used during unrest, so do not rely on connectivity for a critical booking.
Health
Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from an endemic country. Malaria risk below 2,000 metres - Addis and the highlands are largely free of it. Altitude matters: Addis is at 2,400 metres and Simien treks go far higher. Medical facilities outside Addis are basic; carry evacuation insurance.
SIM & internet
Ethio Telecom and Safaricom Ethiopia; SIMs require passport registration. 4G in Addis and major towns. Government-ordered shutdowns during periods of unrest are a real and recurring risk.
Chapter 07
Driving
Self-driving is not recommended. Livestock on the road is constant, accident-scene crowds can turn hostile, and checkpoints are frequent. Almost every visitor hires a vehicle with a local driver.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to travel to Ethiopia right now?
It depends entirely on the region and the month. Since 2020 there has been conflict in Tigray and subsequent unrest in Amhara - which includes Lalibela and Gondar - and in parts of Oromia. Addis Ababa and the southern circuit have generally remained accessible. Read your government's advisory the week you book and again the week you fly, and use an operator who monitors road access daily.
What is the deal with the calendar and the clock?
The Ethiopian calendar has twelve 30-day months plus a five- or six-day thirteenth month, and lags the Gregorian by seven to eight years - Ethiopia celebrated the millennium in 2007. The clock counts from 6am, so "three o'clock" locally is 9am. Hotels and airlines use international time; buses and appointments with locals may not. Always confirm which system a time is quoted in.
How do I handle money?
The birr is a controlled currency with a long history of a parallel exchange rate; the official rate was liberalised in 2024 and has moved sharply since. Cash is king, ATMs are unreliable outside Addis, and international cards frequently fail. Bring clean US dollar or euro notes and change through banks. Do not expect to pay for much by card.
