Fiji is the transport hub of the South Pacific and the easiest of the island nations to reach, which is why it takes more visitors than the rest combined. Around 333 islands, of which roughly a third are inhabited, spread across two main landmasses — Viti Levu with Nadi and Suva, and Vanua Levu to the north — plus the Mamanuca and Yasawa chains that hold most of the resorts and island-hopping backpacker boats.
The diving is the serious draw. The Somosomo Strait's Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall are among the best soft coral sites anywhere, and Beqa Lagoon runs shark dives with eight species. Inland Viti Levu has villages where sevusevu — presenting kava root to the chief on arrival — is still the protocol for visiting, and highland rafting on the Navua river. Cyclone season runs November to April and shapes when to come.

Getting there
Nadi is the Pacific hub, served by Fiji Airways, Qantas, Air New Zealand, Korean Air and connections from Los Angeles, Sydney, Auckland, Singapore and Hong Kong. Suva's Nausori takes regional traffic.
Getting around
The Yasawa Flyer catamaran serves the northern islands daily. Fiji Airways and Northern Air fly domestically. Buses and shared minivans circle Viti Levu cheaply. Car hire works well on the main island.

Driving

What is sevusevu and do I need to do it?
If you visit a village, yes. You present a bundle of kava root — waka — to the chief or their representative, who accepts it on the village's behalf, and only then are you a guest rather than a trespasser. Guides arrange it. Dress modestly, remove hats and sunglasses, and do not touch anyone's head.
When is cyclone season?
November to April, with the highest risk from January to March. Resorts stay open and discount heavily, but a system passing near can mean days of confinement and cancelled boats. May to October is drier, cooler and calmer, and is when the diving visibility is best.
Resorts or islands?
The Mamanucas are close to Nadi, easy and resort-dominated. The Yasawas are further, wilder and where the backpacker boat runs. Taveuni and Vanua Levu are for divers. Viti Levu's Coral Coast is the drive-yourself option. Most trips combine mainland and one island chain.
