Fiji
333 islands, soft coral diving and the Pacific's most practised hospitality.
“333 islands, soft coral diving and the Pacific's most practised hospitality.”
Fiji is the transport hub of the South Pacific and the easiest of the island nations to reach, which is why it takes more visitors than the rest combined. Around 333 islands, of which roughly a third are inhabited, spread across two main landmasses - Viti Levu with Nadi and Suva, and Vanua Levu to the north - plus the Mamanuca and Yasawa chains that hold most of the resorts and island-hopping backpacker boats.
The diving is the serious draw. The Somosomo Strait's Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall are among the best soft coral sites anywhere, and Beqa Lagoon runs shark dives with eight species. Inland Viti Levu has villages where sevusevu - presenting kava root to the chief on arrival - is still the protocol for visiting, and highland rafting on the Navua river. Cyclone season runs November to April and shapes when to come.
Chapter 01
Highlights
Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall
Soft coral diving in the Somosomo Strait between Vanua Levu and Taveuni - currents feed the corals and the White Wall is a sheer face of soft coral that appears luminous at depth.
The Yasawa Islands
A chain running northwest from Nadi, reached by the Yasawa Flyer catamaran, with everything from village homestays and backpacker huts to small luxury resorts, plus the Sawa-i-Lau caves.
Beqa Lagoon shark dives
Baited dives with up to eight shark species including bull and tiger sharks, run under a conservation programme that pays the traditional owners of the reef for a no-fishing area.
Highland Viti Levu
The Navua river gorge, Nausori Highlands villages, the Sigatoka sand dunes and the interior where sevusevu and kava remain the protocol for arriving anywhere.

Fiji gives a United States passport one of the most generous waivers anywhere: four months, granted on arrival with nothing applied for beforehand, and extendable inside the country to six months in total if you apply to Immigration before the stamp expires rather than after. Bring a passport valid six months, a return or onward ticket and evidence of funds and of somewhere to stay, because all three are genuinely asked for at Nadi. The visitor permit is for tourism - working on it is not allowed, and unpaid volunteering needs a permit of its own, which catches well-meaning arrivals every year. A yellow fever certificate is required if you have come from or transited an endemic country. What actually costs visitors money here is biosecurity: every food item, plant, seed, wooden carving and piece of animal product must be declared, luggage is screened, and the fines for an undeclared apple are not symbolic. Fiji is also the regional hub, so anyone continuing to Vanuatu, Tonga or Samoa should check those rules separately - a Fijian entry says nothing about the next island.

July and August coincide with Australian and New Zealand school holidays and are the peak. December and January are wet but busy with holiday traffic; February and March are the genuine low season.

The Mamanucas
Close-in resort islands, day trips, surf breaks at Cloudbreak and Tavarua.
The Yasawas
The northwestern chain, the Flyer catamaran, village homestays and the Sawa-i-Lau caves.
The Coral Coast and Suva
Viti Levu's southern shore, Sigatoka's dunes, Pacific Harbour and the capital in the wet southeast.
Vanua Levu and Taveuni
Savusavu, the Somosomo Strait diving, Bouma's waterfalls and the meridian line through Taveuni.
Chapter 06
Practical guide
Getting there
Nadi is the Pacific hub, served by Fiji Airways, Qantas, Air New Zealand, Korean Air and connections from Los Angeles, Sydney, Auckland, Singapore and Hong Kong. Suva's Nausori takes regional traffic.
Getting around
The Yasawa Flyer catamaran serves the northern islands daily. Fiji Airways and Northern Air fly domestically. Buses and shared minivans circle Viti Levu cheaply. Car hire works well on the main island.
Money & costs
Fijian dollar. Cards work at resorts and in Nadi and Suva; carry cash for villages, buses and markets. ATMs in the main towns and at the airport.
Safety
Generally safe. Petty theft in Nadi and Suva, and some caution warranted in Suva after dark. Rip currents and reef cuts are the practical hazards; coral cuts infect readily in the tropics and need immediate cleaning.
Health
No malaria. Dengue outbreaks occur - use repellent. Typhoid and hepatitis A vaccination is generally advised. Good private clinics in Nadi and Suva; anything serious means evacuation to Australia or New Zealand.
SIM & internet
Vodafone Fiji and Digicel; tourist SIMs at the airport. 4G on Viti Levu and the main islands; patchy in the outer Yasawas and Lau group.
Chapter 07
Driving
Left-hand traffic. The Queens and Kings roads circle Viti Levu and are mostly sealed. Villages, dogs, horses and pedestrians on the carriageway are constant - slow right down through settlements, where informal speed humps are common.

Frequently asked questions
What is sevusevu and do I need to do it?
If you visit a village, yes. You present a bundle of kava root - waka - to the chief or their representative, who accepts it on the village's behalf, and only then are you a guest rather than a trespasser. Guides arrange it. Dress modestly, remove hats and sunglasses, and do not touch anyone's head.
When is cyclone season?
November to April, with the highest risk from January to March. Resorts stay open and discount heavily, but a system passing near can mean days of confinement and cancelled boats. May to October is drier, cooler and calmer, and is when the diving visibility is best.
Resorts or islands?
The Mamanucas are close to Nadi, easy and resort-dominated. The Yasawas are further, wilder and where the backpacker boat runs. Taveuni and Vanua Levu are for divers. Viti Levu's Coral Coast is the drive-yourself option. Most trips combine mainland and one island chain.
