Lesotho is the only country in the world whose entire territory lies above 1,400 metres, and most of it is a great deal higher. It sits enclosed by South Africa, is reached by mountain passes, and in winter the Maloti range gets snow deep enough to support Southern Africa's only ski resort at Afriski. Basotho herders in conical hats and heavy blankets on horseback are not a tourism performance; horses are still how people move across this terrain.
The famous approach is Sani Pass, a rough 4x4 climb from KwaZulu-Natal to 2,876 metres with a pub at the top. Inside, Maletsunyane falls drop 192 metres in a single plunge, Sehlabathebe's rock formations sit in high wilderness, and pony trekking from Malealea or Semonkong is how most visitors see the interior. It is cold, high, poor and extraordinarily scenic.
Highlights

The Basotho pony is the traditional transport of the highlands and multi-day treks from Malealea or Semonkong reach villages, rock art and passes that no vehicle gets to.
Thaba Bosiu and Sehlabathebe
The flat-topped mountain fortress where Moshoeshoe I founded the nation and held off every attacker, and the high wilderness park in the southeast with sandstone arches and the Maloti minnow.

Practical guide
Getting there
Moshoeshoe I International near Maseru has only a thin Airlink service from Johannesburg. Almost everyone drives in — Maseru Bridge is the main crossing, Sani Pass the scenic one, Caledonspoort and Qacha's Nek the others.
Getting around
A hire car from South Africa is the standard approach. Minibus taxis cover the country cheaply and slowly. Pony trekking and hiking are how you reach the interior. Distances look small and take much longer than the map suggests.

Safety
Petty crime in Maseru, particularly after dark. Rural Lesotho is safe but remote — mountain weather changes fast and exposure is the real risk. Political instability has produced periodic tension in the capital; avoid demonstrations.

Do I need a 4x4?
For Sani Pass from the South African side, yes, and rental agreements often prohibit it — take an organised trip from Underberg instead. Inside Lesotho the main A-roads are tarred and a normal car copes, but mountain side roads, snow in winter and river crossings in summer all argue for clearance.
How cold does it get?
Genuinely cold. Winter nights routinely drop below freezing across the highlands and snow closes passes from May to August. Even in summer, evenings at 2,500 metres are chilly and afternoon thunderstorms are violent. Pack for a mountain trip, not an African one.
Can I use rand?
Yes. The loti is pegged one-to-one with the South African rand and rand circulates freely. Maloti are not accepted in South Africa, so spend them before you leave. Cards work in Maseru; carry cash everywhere else.
