“The only country entirely above 1,400 metres - a mountain kingdom inside South Africa.”

Lesotho is the only country in the world whose entire territory lies above 1,400 metres, and most of it is a great deal higher. It sits enclosed by South Africa, is reached by mountain passes, and in winter the Maloti range gets snow deep enough to support Southern Africa's only ski resort at Afriski. Basotho herders in conical hats and heavy blankets on horseback are not a tourism performance; horses are still how people move across this terrain.

The famous approach is Sani Pass, a rough 4x4 climb from KwaZulu-Natal to 2,876 metres with a pub at the top. Inside, Maletsunyane falls drop 192 metres in a single plunge, Sehlabathebe's rock formations sit in high wilderness, and pony trekking from Malealea or Semonkong is how most visitors see the interior. It is cold, high, poor and extraordinarily scenic.

Chapter 01

Highlights

01

Sani Pass

A 4x4 track climbing 1,300 metres of hairpins from South Africa to the border at 2,876 metres, with the highest pub in Africa at the top. Day trips run from Underberg; the pass has been progressively tarred from the Lesotho side.

02

Maletsunyane Falls

A 192-metre single drop near Semonkong - the highest single-drop waterfall in Southern Africa - with what has been billed as the world's longest commercial single-drop abseil beside it.

03

Pony trekking

The Basotho pony is the traditional transport of the highlands and multi-day treks from Malealea or Semonkong reach villages, rock art and passes that no vehicle gets to.

04

Thaba Bosiu and Sehlabathebe

The flat-topped mountain fortress where Moshoeshoe I founded the nation and held off every attacker, and the high wilderness park in the southeast with sandstone arches and the Maloti minnow.

Lesotho asks nothing of a United States passport - no visa, no authorisation, no fee, a stamp written at the border. Lesotho is the only country on earth entirely surrounded by one other, so unless you are on the thin Airlink service into Moshoeshoe I from Johannesburg, every arrival is overland from South Africa and the South African leg is the one to get right. Maseru Bridge is the main crossing and the busiest - Friday afternoons and month-end are when the queues form - with Caledonspoort and Qacha’s Nek quieter and Sani Pass the one people come for: a 4x4-only climb of some 1,300 metres from the South African side to a post at 2,876 metres, daylight hours only, impassable in snow, and prohibited outright by most South African rental agreements, which is why the sensible version is an organised day trip from Underberg rather than your own hire car. Not everyone on Lesotho’s exemption list gets the same period, and the difference is large: most European Union passports are written for as little as fourteen days here, with Ireland the exception at 90, so anyone travelling with you on a European document should read their own line in the table above rather than assume yours. Ask the officer to write the period you actually need and read the stamp before you drive away - an extension afterwards means a trip to the Department of Immigration in Maseru rather than a phone call. The passport wants six months beyond arrival. A foreign-registered vehicle pays a small road levy in cash at the border, in maloti or rand, which circulate interchangeably. The interior is high - most of the country sits above 1,400 metres and the passes go far higher - so a fast drive up from the lowveld is an altitude gain worth respecting. Whatever this border asks of you, the South African one is the leg that decides the trip. Leaving South Africa spends the permission you came in on, and returning is a fresh entry rather than a continuation of the stay you left: an American or British passport is stamped for a new period at the officer’s discretion, and a passport that needed a South African visa needs a MULTIPLE-ENTRY one or there is no way back. Ask for the days you actually need on the way into South Africa rather than on the way out of it, keep every stamp legible, and do not treat a day trip as a day trip in immigration terms - it is two exits and two entries. If the car is hired in South Africa, arrange the cross-border letter with the rental company when you book: the agencies charge for it, want several days’ notice, will not hand over the registration papers at the counter without it, and a border post will turn a car back that arrives without the paperwork. South Africa has at various times asked for additional documents for children crossing its borders, so check the current position before driving in with minors. Lesotho asks for a yellow fever certificate only from travellers arriving from a country where the disease is a risk, which under the International Health Regulations includes a stopover of MORE than twelve hours in an airport in one. A direct flight from Europe or North America does not trigger it; a routing through West or Central Africa does, and so does an overland arrival that began there. Where it applies, the injection has to be given at least ten days before you travel for the certificate to count.

Regions to know

5

Maseru and the lowlands

The capital on the border, Thaba Bosiu's fortress mountain and the sandstone country north and south.

The Maloti highlands

Afriski, the Mafika-Lisiu and Moteng passes and the highest tarred road in Southern Africa.

Semonkong

Maletsunyane falls, the abseil, pony trekking and the "place of smoke" itself.

The Sani corridor

Mokhotlong, Thabana Ntlenyana - Southern Africa's highest peak at 3,482 metres - and the pass down to KwaZulu-Natal.

The southeast

Qacha's Nek, Sehlabathebe national park and the remote wilderness along the Drakensberg escarpment.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

Moshoeshoe I International near Maseru has only a thin Airlink service from Johannesburg. Almost everyone drives in - Maseru Bridge is the main crossing, Sani Pass the scenic one, Caledonspoort and Qacha's Nek the others.

Getting around

A hire car from South Africa is the standard approach. Minibus taxis cover the country cheaply and slowly. Pony trekking and hiking are how you reach the interior. Distances look small and take much longer than the map suggests.

Money & costs

Loti, pegged to and interchangeable with the rand. ATMs in Maseru and the district towns. Cards at Maseru hotels; cash everywhere else.

Safety

Petty crime in Maseru, particularly after dark. Rural Lesotho is safe but remote - mountain weather changes fast and exposure is the real risk. Political instability has produced periodic tension in the capital; avoid demonstrations.

Health

No malaria - the altitude precludes it, which is one of the few places in the region you can say that. Altitude sickness is possible above 3,000 metres. HIV prevalence is among the world's highest. Medical facilities are basic; serious cases go to Bloemfontein.

SIM & internet

Vodacom Lesotho and Econet; SIM registration requires a passport. Coverage follows the roads and towns; the high interior has none.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 4x4?

For Sani Pass from the South African side, yes, and rental agreements often prohibit it - take an organised trip from Underberg instead. Inside Lesotho the main A-roads are tarred and a normal car copes, but mountain side roads, snow in winter and river crossings in summer all argue for clearance.

How cold does it get?

Genuinely cold. Winter nights routinely drop below freezing across the highlands and snow closes passes from May to August. Even in summer, evenings at 2,500 metres are chilly and afternoon thunderstorms are violent. Pack for a mountain trip, not an African one.

Can I use rand?

Yes. The loti is pegged one-to-one with the South African rand and rand circulates freely. Maloti are not accepted in South Africa, so spend them before you leave. Cards work in Maseru; carry cash everywhere else.
