“Sixteen kilometres long, with a prince, a castle and the Rhine down one side.”
Liechtenstein is 160 square kilometres between the Rhine and the Alps, with 40,000 residents, no airport, and a reigning prince who holds genuine constitutional power - unusually for a modern European monarch, including the right to veto legislation and dismiss the government. Vaduz, the capital, has around 5,700 people.
The half of the country on the valley floor is unremarkable small-town Alpine Europe. The half that rises steeply behind it is not: the Fürstensteig ridge path, the Malbun ski area at 1,600 metres, and a network of well-marked trails that connect to the Swiss and Austrian systems. The princely art collection, one of the largest private collections in the world, shows in the modern Kunstmuseum in Vaduz.
Chapter 01
Highlights
The Fürstensteig
A ridge path cut into the rock above Vaduz with cable handrails and serious exposure - the country's signature walk, three to four hours, and not for anyone uneasy with heights.
Vaduz Castle and the Kunstmuseum
The castle is the prince's residence and closed to the public, but the walk up to it is open and the view is the point. The Kunstmuseum below shows works from one of the world's largest private collections.
Malbun
A small ski area at 1,600 metres in a side valley - modest by Alpine standards, family-oriented, and the base for summer walking into the Alpine ridges.
The Liechtenstein Trail
A 75-kilometre marked route through all eleven municipalities with an app that narrates 147 points along it. Walkable in three or four days end to end.

The detail
- Maximum stay
- up to 90 days
- Fee
- free entry
- Passport validity
- Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
- Onward travel
- Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
- Health
- No vaccinations required. Healthcare is excellent and expensive; Liechtenstein is in the EEA, so EHIC/GHIC applies for EU and UK visitors, which is a useful difference from Switzerland next door. Insurance covering mountain rescue is still worth having. Tap water is excellent.
- Money
- Swiss franc - Liechtenstein is in a currency and customs union with Switzerland, though it is an EEA member and Switzerland is not, which is an unusual combination. Cards are accepted everywhere. Prices are Swiss. Tipping is rounding up.
Liechtenstein is inside the Schengen area - it joined through its customs and monetary union with Switzerland - so a United States passport needs no visa, pays nothing, and meets no frontier here at all. The country has no airport and no border control on either side: you arrive by bus or road from Switzerland or across the Rhine from Austria, both of them Schengen countries, and there is nothing to stop for. Your permission was granted where you entered the area, usually Zurich, and your days here are ordinary Schengen days: 90 days in any rolling 180, shared across the whole twenty-nine-country Schengen area rather than granted afresh by Liechtenstein. The window rolls - count backwards 180 days from any date and add up every day you were anywhere in the area, arrival and departure days included. Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System has been fully operational, after a phased start in October 2025: your first crossing records a facial image and fingerprints, the passport is no longer stamped, and the count is now kept by a machine rather than by an officer finding the right inky page - and because Liechtenstein has no external border of its own, all of that happens at the airport you flew into rather than anywhere in the principality. ETIAS was announced but not required at the time of writing; check when you book. Your passport must be valid three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area. Two local particulars worth knowing: the money and the customs rules are Swiss rather than EU, so what you may carry in and out follows the Swiss allowances and prices are quoted in francs; and the tourist office in Vaduz sells a souvenir stamp for a few francs, which is the only stamp anyone here will put in a passport. Living in Liechtenstein is a different matter entirely - residence is capped by quota and is among the most restrictive regimes in Europe - but none of that touches a visit.

Where this sits among 244 countries we have costed
Vaduz hotel rates move relatively little and are driven by business travel; Malbun has a clear December-to-March ski peak and a summer walking season. April and November are the dead months when the mountain infrastructure is shut. Staying across the border in Buchs or Feldkirch cuts accommodation costs substantially.

Regions to know
5Vaduz
The capital - the castle above, the Kunstmuseum and national museum below, and the Rhine a short walk west.
The Oberland
The upper country - Triesenberg's Walser settlement, the Fürstensteig ridge and the Alpine trails above.
Malbun & Steg
The side valley with the ski area, summer walking and the country's only real mountain resort.
The Unterland
The lower country toward Austria - Schellenberg's ruins, Bendern and the Ruggell wetland reserve.
The Rhine valley
The flat western strip along the river, with cycle paths and the crossings into Switzerland including a covered wooden bridge.
Chapter 06
Practical guide
Getting there
No airport. Buses from Sargans, Buchs and Feldkirch stations connect to Vaduz in 20–30 minutes and run frequently. Zurich airport is ninety minutes by train and bus. Driving is straightforward from the Swiss or Austrian motorways.
Getting around
The LIEmobil bus network covers all eleven municipalities and connects into Switzerland and Austria; it is frequent, punctual and inexpensive by local standards. Buses reach Malbun and the main trailheads. Nothing here needs a car, and the country is small enough to cycle end to end.
Money & costs
Swiss franc - Liechtenstein is in a currency and customs union with Switzerland, though it is an EEA member and Switzerland is not, which is an unusual combination. Cards are accepted everywhere. Prices are Swiss. Tipping is rounding up.
Safety
Among the safest countries anywhere. The hazards are entirely mountain - the Fürstensteig has genuine exposure and people have died on it, weather changes fast at altitude, and winter avalanche risk applies off-piste. Mountain rescue is charged.
Health
No vaccinations required. Healthcare is excellent and expensive; Liechtenstein is in the EEA, so EHIC/GHIC applies for EU and UK visitors, which is a useful difference from Switzerland next door. Insurance covering mountain rescue is still worth having. Tap water is excellent.
SIM & internet
In the EEA but not the EU, and roaming treatment varies by operator - many include it in their European zone, some do not, and phones frequently hop to Swiss networks where charges are higher. Check before arriving. Coverage is complete in the valley and good on the trails.
Chapter 07
Driving
The Swiss vignette applies on the approach roads through Switzerland and is checked - buy it before crossing. The road up to Malbun is steep and requires winter equipment in snow. There are no motorways inside the country.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get there?
By bus from Sargans or Buchs in Switzerland, or Feldkirch in Austria - all under half an hour, and Zurich airport is about ninety minutes away. There is no airport. A few trains cross the country on the Austrian line but the useful stations are over the border.
Is a day enough?
For Vaduz, yes - the centre takes two hours. For the country, no. The mountain half is why to come, and the Fürstensteig alone takes half a day. Two or three days gives you the ridge walks and Malbun; a week does the Liechtenstein Trail end to end.
What currency and how expensive?
The Swiss franc, in a customs and currency union with Switzerland - and Swiss prices to match. A restaurant main runs €28–35, a mid-range hotel €170. Staying in Buchs or Feldkirch across the border is cheaper and half an hour away.
