Monaco

“Two square kilometres, and a Grand Prix run through the streets of it.”

Monaco is 2.08 square kilometres of Mediterranean coast, the second-smallest sovereign state after the Vatican, and the most densely populated country on earth. The Grimaldi family has ruled it since 1297. It has no income tax, which explains the concentration of wealth, and the harbour full of boats that are larger than some of the buildings.

For a visitor it is a half-day or a very expensive week. The old town on the rock holds the palace, the cathedral where Grace Kelly is buried and the Oceanographic Museum built into the cliff; Monte-Carlo has the casino and the opera house. In late May the Grand Prix closes the streets and turns the whole place into a circuit, which is either the reason to come or the reason to avoid it.

Chapter 01

Highlights

01

Monaco-Ville and the palace

The old town on a rock above the sea, with the changing of the guard at 11:55, the cathedral holding the Grimaldi tombs, and narrow streets that are the only quiet part of the country.

02

The Oceanographic Museum

Built into the cliff face in 1910 and directed by Jacques Cousteau for thirty years - aquariums, a shark lagoon and a collection that predates most of modern marine science.

03

The Casino de Monte-Carlo

A Belle Époque building by the architect of the Paris Opéra. You can visit the atrium free and the gaming rooms for a fee with a dress code; Monégasque citizens are not permitted to gamble.

04

The Grand Prix circuit on foot

The street circuit is public road for fifty weeks of the year - walk Sainte-Dévote, the tunnel and the Rascasse hairpin and the television footage stops making sense in the best way.

Health
No vaccinations required. Healthcare is excellent and expensive; Monaco is not in the EU, so EHIC/GHIC does not apply and insurance is necessary. Nice has the nearest large hospitals. Tap water is safe.

Monaco issues no visa, charges nothing and stamps nothing, and a United States passport meets no Monégasque border officer: the frontier with France is a line on a road and a railway you cross without stopping. Monaco is not a member of the Schengen area, but under long-standing agreements with France it is treated as part of it - French rules govern who may be there, a French Schengen visa admits you, and arrivals from outside the area by sea or by helicopter are checked by French officers under those same rules. The consequence for an American visitor is that the allowance is not Monaco’s to give: it is 90 days in any rolling 180, shared across the whole twenty-nine-country Schengen area rather than granted afresh here - the Schengen days you arrived with - so a fortnight in Monaco is a fortnight of the same ninety you would have spent in Nice. The window rolls - count backwards 180 days from any date and add up every day you were anywhere in the area, arrival and departure days included. Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System has been fully operational, after a phased start in October 2025: your first crossing records a facial image and fingerprints, the passport is no longer stamped, and the count is now kept by a machine rather than by an officer finding the right inky page - that happens where you entered the area, because the road in from France is not an external border and nobody is enrolled at it. ETIAS was announced but not required at the time of writing; check when you book, and expect it to govern the flight into France rather than the drive along the coast. Your passport must be valid three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area. Two things to do differently here: carry the passport rather than leaving it in the hotel, because this is among the most closely policed square kilometres in Europe and identity checks are routine and unremarkable; and read the local ordinances, since swimwear away from the beach and going shirtless in the street are fined.

The event calendar governs everything. Grand Prix week in late May, the Yacht Show in September and the Monte-Carlo Masters in April all multiply hotel rates and impose minimum stays. Outside those, winter is genuinely affordable by Monaco standards. Most visitors sidestep the accommodation problem entirely by staying in Nice.

The old town on the rock - the palace, the cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum built into the cliff.

Monte-Carlo

The casino, the opera house, the luxury retail and the Belle Époque hotels around Casino Square.

La Condamine & Port Hercule

The harbour, the market with the best-value eating in the country, and the yacht show berths.

Fontvieille

Land reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s, with the stadium, the classic car collection and a quiet park.

The public beach and the Japanese garden, plus the exotic garden and its cave above the western end.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) is the airport, thirty minutes away by bus or helicopter. Trains from Nice take twenty minutes and run frequently, arriving at an underground station in the middle of the country. Buses from Nice and Menton are cheaper and slower. There is nowhere to land a plane in Monaco itself.

Getting around

On foot, assisted by a network of free public lifts and escalators that solve the vertical problem - the country is built up a steep hillside and the lifts are how residents move. Local buses cover the six districts cheaply. There is no reason to drive and every reason not to.

Money & costs

Euro, used under agreement - Monaco is not in the EU. Cards are accepted everywhere. Tipping is around 10 % where service is not included. Note that the country is in the EU customs union and the VAT area through its arrangement with France, so shopping is not duty-free.

Safety

One of the safest places on earth, with an extremely high density of police and CCTV. Crime against visitors is close to nonexistent. Dress codes apply at the casino and some restaurants, and swimwear away from the beach is actually against local ordinance. The practical hazard is traffic on narrow streets.

Health

No vaccinations required. Healthcare is excellent and expensive; Monaco is not in the EU, so EHIC/GHIC does not apply and insurance is necessary. Nice has the nearest large hospitals. Tap water is safe.

SIM & internet

Not in the EU, so EU roaming does not apply - though many operators include Monaco in their European zone, and coverage from French networks bleeds in. Check your plan. Coverage is complete and free public wifi is widespread.

Do not drive here. The country is two square kilometres of one-way streets, tunnels and multi-storey car parks, parking is expensive and metered, and the train from Nice takes twenty minutes. During the Grand Prix week much of the road network is closed entirely.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth more than a day trip?

For most people, no. Monaco is walkable end to end in an hour and the sights take half a day. It works best as a day trip from Nice, which is twenty minutes by train, or as an evening. Staying overnight makes sense mainly during the Grand Prix or the yacht show, when it is also astronomically expensive.

How expensive is it?

Very, but selectively. A room starts around €280 and rises steeply, and restaurants in Monte-Carlo are priced accordingly. The workaround is that the museums are reasonable, the public lifts and escalators through the terraces are free, the buses are cheap, and lunch in the Condamine market costs what it would in Nice.

What happens during the Grand Prix?

The last full weekend in May, streets close, prices multiply - hotels commonly require multi-night minimums at several times the normal rate - and the country fills. Grandstand tickets run into the hundreds. If you are not there for the race, avoid that week entirely; if you are, book a year ahead.
