Getting there
Tocumen (PTY) is Latin America’s great hub: Copa connects the whole hemisphere, and direct European flights arrive from Amsterdam (KLM), Madrid (Iberia), Paris (Air France), Frankfurt (Lufthansa) and Istanbul (Turkish) — 11–13 hours nonstop from Europe, the easiest arrival in Central America. Overland, comfortable coaches run from San José, Costa Rica (14–16 h) to the Albrook terminal. There is no land route to or from Colombia — fly or take the adventurous San Blas sailing crossing.
Getting around
Panama City has Central America’s only metro (35–50 cents a ride) plus Uber everywhere. Long-distance buses leave Albrook for the whole country — Panama City–David is 7 hours on the smooth Pan-American, with executive night coaches. Air Panama hops to Bocas and David from the domestic Albrook airport. San Blas access is a 4x4-only road plus boat, arranged as a package; Bocas is a flight or an overnight bus-and-water-taxi combination.

Ocean safety deserves respect — Pacific rip currents at Playa Venao and Santa Catalina, and weather windows for San Blas boat transfers that good operators respect (be suspicious of ones that don’t). The Darién is expedition territory only.

Prepaid data is cheap and coverage strong along the whole Pan-American corridor — €10 buys 10–15 GB from the main operators (Tigo leads coverage; passport to register). eSIMs work seamlessly. 4G/5G blankets the capital; Bocas and Boquete are solid, while Guna Yala is a proper digital detox — a weak signal on a few islands, nothing dependable. Download everything before the 4x4 leaves the highway.
Driving
The Pan-American to David is the best long-distance road in Central America — smooth, fast, dual-carriageway for long stretches. The Panapass electronic-only tolls catch visitors out: a rental with an empty tag balance means fines mailed to the agency and charged to your card.

Is Panama safe?
Broadly yes — Panama City is among the region’s more comfortable capitals, and the tourist circuit is easygoing. Skip the El Chorrillo and Curundú neighbourhoods on foot, treat Colón city as a transit point only, and use registered taxis or Uber at night. The Darién Gap is genuinely off-limits for overland travel — there is no safe road to Colombia, and no reason to test that.
When is the best time to visit Panama?
Mid-December to April is the Pacific-side dry season — the "verano" of blue skies and trade winds, and the safest bet for San Blas sailing. May to November is green season: short, hard afternoon storms, big discounts and lush highlands. Bocas del Toro runs its own Caribbean calendar with its driest spells around September–October and February–March — exactly offset from the rest of the country.
How much does a day in Panama cost?
Around €80 ($86) per day mid-range: €35–40 for your half of a double, €18–20 for food, the rest for transport and activities. Backpackers manage on €40 ($43) using hostels, fondas (a comida corriente is €4) and the metro at 35 cents. San Blas is the splurge — €85+ per person per day all-inclusive — and worth every cent.
