Pitcairn has around forty residents, almost all descended from the nine Bounty mutineers and the Tahitian men and women who came with them in 1790 — they burned the ship in what is still called Bounty Bay, and the settlement was not found for eighteen years. It is a British Overseas Territory, the least populous jurisdiction in the world, and the surnames are still Christian, Warren and Young.
Getting there is the whole first act. There is no airport. The MV Silver Supporter sails from Mangareva in French Polynesia — itself reached by a flight from Tahiti — and takes about 32 hours each way, running roughly every two weeks. That schedule fixes your visit at a minimum of about ten days on the island. There is no hotel; you stay in a resident's home. The surrounding marine reserve covers 830,000 square kilometres, and Henderson Island in the group is a UNESCO site notorious for the plastic that washes up on its uninhabited shore.

Practical guide
Getting there
Air Tahiti flies weekly Papeete–Mangareva; the MV Silver Supporter sails Mangareva–Pitcairn in about 32 hours, roughly fortnightly. Passing cruise and expedition ships occasionally land passengers when the swell allows.
Getting around
Quad bikes are the island vehicle — the road from Bounty Bay up the Hill of Difficulty is steep and unsealed. Everything is within walking distance if you are fit, and residents give lifts as a matter of course.
