Pitcairn Islands

Forty people descended from the Bounty mutineers, and a ship every fortnight.

“Forty people descended from the Bounty mutineers, and a ship every fortnight.”

Pitcairn has around forty residents, almost all descended from the nine Bounty mutineers and the Tahitian men and women who came with them in 1790 - they burned the ship in what is still called Bounty Bay, and the settlement was not found for eighteen years. It is a British Overseas Territory, the least populous jurisdiction in the world, and the surnames are still Christian, Warren and Young.

Getting there is the whole first act. There is no airport. The MV Silver Supporter sails from Mangareva in French Polynesia - itself reached by a flight from Tahiti - and takes about 32 hours each way, running roughly every two weeks. That schedule fixes your visit at a minimum of about ten days on the island. There is no hotel; you stay in a resident's home. The surrounding marine reserve covers 830,000 square kilometres, and Henderson Island in the group is a UNESCO site notorious for the plastic that washes up on its uninhabited shore.

Highlights

01

The Bounty story

Bounty Bay where the ship was burned, the anchor in Adamstown square, Fletcher Christian's cave above the settlement and John Adams's grave - the whole island is the site.

02

Staying with a family

There is no hotel. Visitors stay in residents' homes, eat with them and join in island life, including the public work days. It is the only way to visit and it is the reason people come.

03

The Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve

One of the largest marine protected areas in the world at 830,000 square kilometres, with some of the clearest water on the planet and reefs almost never dived.

04

Henderson Island

An uninhabited raised atoll in the group, UNESCO-listed for its untouched ecology and, paradoxically, among the most plastic-polluted shorelines on earth from ocean currents. Landings are rare and permit-controlled.

The ship schedule, not the season, determines everything. Sailings thin around the holidays and berths are limited enough that popular months book a year ahead.

Regions to know

5

Adamstown

The only settlement - the square, the Bounty anchor, the church, the museum and the post office.

Bounty Bay and the Landing

Where the ship was burned and where the longboat still meets the supply vessel in swell.

The island interior

Christian's Cave, Highest Point at 347 metres, Down Rope's Polynesian petroglyphs and the garden plots.

Henderson Island

A UNESCO-listed raised atoll 190 kilometres northeast, uninhabited, ecologically intact and plastic-strewn.

Ducie and Oeno

Two uninhabited atolls in the group, visited very occasionally by the island longboat on a supply run.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

Air Tahiti flies weekly Papeete–Mangareva; the MV Silver Supporter sails Mangareva–Pitcairn in about 32 hours, roughly fortnightly. Passing cruise and expedition ships occasionally land passengers when the swell allows.

Getting around

Quad bikes are the island vehicle - the road from Bounty Bay up the Hill of Difficulty is steep and unsealed. Everything is within walking distance if you are fit, and residents give lifts as a matter of course.

Money & costs

New Zealand dollar. There is no bank and no ATM. Bring all the cash you need; the island shop and the crafts are cash transactions, though larger payments can sometimes be arranged in advance.

Safety

No crime to speak of. The hazards are the landing at Bounty Bay in swell, the cliff paths and the sheer remoteness - a serious injury means waiting for the ship or a medical evacuation that takes days to arrange.

Health

A clinic with a resident doctor or nurse handles basic care. Anything serious means evacuation, which is measured in days rather than hours. Comprehensive medical insurance is a condition of the landing licence and is not a formality.

SIM & internet

Satellite internet serves the island, with usage that has improved but remains limited and expensive. There is mobile coverage of a sort. Do not plan on being reliably reachable.

A few kilometres of unsealed track, most of it steep. Quad bikes do everything. The Hill of Difficulty from the landing to Adamstown is exactly what its name says.

Chapter 09

Frequently asked questions

How do I actually get there?

Fly to Tahiti, then to Mangareva in the Gambier Islands - a weekly Air Tahiti service - then take the MV Silver Supporter about 32 hours to Pitcairn. The ship runs roughly fortnightly, which means a stay of ten to twelve days minimum. Book the ship first; everything else follows from its schedule.

Where do I stay and what does it cost?

In a resident's home, arranged in advance through the Pitcairn tourism office, at a set nightly rate including meals. The ship fare is the big cost - well over a thousand pounds return. There is no other accommodation and no restaurant.

Do I need a visa?

No visa, but you need a licence to land, applied for in advance and granted with your confirmed voyage and accommodation. You must also show evidence of medical insurance and, for longer stays, of funds. Landing without prior arrangement is not possible.
