Puerto Rico

“A Caribbean island that votes in American primaries and dances to bomba”

Puerto Rico is the Caribbean without the paperwork for Americans and with all of the paperwork for everyone else: an unincorporated US territory whose residents are US citizens, cannot vote for president while living there, and have kept Spanish as the working language of the island for a century and a quarter of American administration.

What that produces is a place where the dollar is the currency and the post office is federal, but the food is criollo, the music is bomba and plena, and Old San Juan is the oldest European-founded settlement under the US flag. Add the only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system and three bioluminescent bays, and the island earns more than a stopover.

Chapter 01

Highlights

01

Old San Juan

Sixteenth-century street grid inside city walls, with El Morro and San Cristóbal guarding the harbour entrance - a UNESCO site and a working neighbourhood at the same time.

02

El Yunque

The only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system: 11,000 hectares of it, with waterfalls reachable on short trails and a road that climbs into cloud.

03

Mosquito Bay, Vieques

The brightest recorded bioluminescent bay in the world. Go on a moonless night, in a clear-bottom kayak, and accept that no photograph will work.

04

Ponce and the south

The second city has a fire station painted like a chessboard, a serious art museum, and a coast that sees a fraction of the north shore's visitors.

Passport validity
Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
Onward travel
Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
Health
US-standard hospitals in San Juan. Dengue circulates and mosquito precautions are sensible year-round. Travel insurance matters because US medical pricing applies.
Money
US dollar, cards everywhere, ATMs common. Tipping follows US convention at 15–20 per cent, which surprises European visitors more than the prices do.

Regions to know

5

San Juan

The walled old town, Condado and Santurce - history, beaches and the best eating on the island.

El Yunque and the east

Rainforest, Fajardo's bio bay and the ferry port for the offshore islands.

Vieques and Culebra

Two small islands with the emptiest beaches and the brightest bay.

The west coast

Rincón for surf and sunsets, Cabo Rojo for salt flats and cliffs.

The south

Ponce, the Guánica dry forest and a coastline that sees a fraction of the traffic.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

San Juan (SJU) is the Caribbean's busiest airport, with direct flights from a dozen US cities and seasonal service from Europe. Aguadilla and Ponce take a handful of mainland routes.

Getting around

A rental car is close to essential outside San Juan; the público shared-van network exists but runs on its own logic. Ferries reach Vieques and Culebra from Ceiba, and they sell out - book online the moment the window opens.

Money & costs

US dollar, cards everywhere, ATMs common. Tipping follows US convention at 15–20 per cent, which surprises European visitors more than the prices do.

Safety

San Juan tourist districts are routine; La Perla and parts of the south of the capital are not places to wander into. Rip currents on the north coast beaches are the more likely hazard.

Health

US-standard hospitals in San Juan. Dengue circulates and mosquito precautions are sensible year-round. Travel insurance matters because US medical pricing applies.

SIM & internet

Good 4G/5G across the island, thin in the interior mountains. US plans are domestic; eSIM options are the same as for the mainland US.

The island posts speed limits in miles per hour and distances on the same signs in kilometres - a genuine quirk of US administration over a metric island, and it catches people out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is US territory for immigration purposes, so US rules apply exactly: US citizens need no passport arriving from the mainland, and everyone else needs whatever the United States requires of them - ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program, or a US visa. There is no separate Puerto Rican permission.

Is the island recovered from the hurricanes?

Tourism infrastructure in San Juan, Rincón and the main resort areas has been running normally for years. The electrical grid remains the weak point island-wide and outages still happen; most hotels have generators, and it is worth asking.

Can I use dollars and my US phone plan?

Yes to both. The dollar is the currency, and US mobile plans treat Puerto Rico as domestic - no roaming charge on the major American carriers. European SIMs do roam and are charged as the US.
