Peninsula beaches that look Caribbean, and a chimpanzee sanctuary in the hills above Freetown.

The Freetown peninsula holds a run of beaches — River No. 2, Tokeh, Bureh — backed by forested hills, that would be famous if they were anywhere else. Freetown itself was founded as a settlement for freed enslaved people from Britain, Nova Scotia and Jamaica, and the Krio culture that resulted is unlike anything else in the region. The Cotton Tree that symbolised the city fell in 2023 after four centuries.

The war ended in 2002 and Ebola in 2016, and Sierra Leone has spent the years since rebuilding a small tourism sector. Tacugama sanctuary above the capital rehabilitates chimpanzees; Tiwai Island in the southeast has one of the highest primate densities in the world; and Turtle Islands and the Banana Islands sit offshore with almost no infrastructure. Getting around is slow, and that is the main constraint.

Highlights

01

The peninsula beaches

River No. 2, Tokeh, Bureh and Lakka run south from Freetown beneath forested hills — white sand, warm Atlantic and a surf scene at Bureh run by a local club.

02

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Forty minutes above Freetown in the Western Area peninsula forest, rehabilitating chimps rescued from the pet and bushmeat trades. Eco-lodges on site let you stay overnight in the reserve.

03

Tiwai Island

A river island in the southeast with one of the highest primate densities recorded anywhere — eleven species including the rare pygmy hippo in the surrounding forest. Basic community-run camping.

04

Bunce Island

The ruins of a British slave-trading fort in the Sierra Leone river, from which many of those enslaved were shipped to the rice plantations of South Carolina and Georgia. Reached by boat from Freetown.

The Krio capital, the National Museum, Fourah Bay College's hill campus and the markets below.

The peninsula

River No. 2, Tokeh, Bureh and Lakka beaches, Tacugama's chimps and the forest reserve behind them.

The northern islands

Bunce Island's slave fort, the Banana Islands with their diving and the Turtle Islands further out.

The south and east

Bo, Kenema, Tiwai Island and the Gola rainforest along the Liberian border.

The north

Makeni, the Loma mountains with Bintumani — West Africa's second-highest peak — and Outamba-Kilimi park.

Practical guide

Getting there

Lungi International is served by Brussels Airlines, Air France, Turkish, Royal Air Maroc, Kenya Airways and ASKY. The water taxi across to Freetown is part of the journey. Overland from Guinea and Liberia is possible but slow.

Getting around

Poda-poda minibuses and shared taxis cover the country; roads to Bo and Kenema are paved and reasonable, the rest much less so. Okada motorbike taxis do local trips. A hired 4x4 with driver is the practical choice for Tiwai or the Outamba-Kilimi park.

Money & costs

Cash leones. ATMs in Freetown are unreliable for foreign cards; card acceptance is limited to a few hotels. Bring US dollars or euros and change at a bank or a licensed bureau.

Safety

Petty theft in Freetown, especially around the markets and at night. Road traffic is the biggest practical danger. Rip currents on the peninsula beaches are strong. Political rallies can turn tense around elections.

Health

Yellow fever certificate compulsory for entry. Malaria year-round nationwide. Medical facilities are very limited even in Freetown; evacuation insurance is essential. Bottled or treated water.

SIM & internet

Orange and Africell; SIM registration requires a passport. 4G in Freetown and the main towns; nothing in the forest reserves. Power cuts are frequent.

Freetown traffic is severe and the peninsula road is narrow and winding. Most visitors hire a car with a driver. Do not drive at night — unlit vehicles and pedestrians are the norm.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe?

Yes, in the ordinary sense — the war ended in 2002 and Sierra Leone is politically calm with low violent crime against visitors. Petty theft in Freetown, poor road safety and limited medical facilities are the real risks. Read a current advisory before you go, but the reputation lags the reality by two decades.

How do I get from the airport to Freetown?

Lungi airport is across the estuary from the city. The Sea Coach and Sea Bird water taxis take about half an hour and are the standard route; there is also a much longer road journey around the bay. Book the water taxi with your flight and factor its last departure into evening arrivals.

What about the currency redenomination?

In 2022 the leone dropped three zeros — old and new notes circulated together for a period and prices are still sometimes quoted in "old leones". Always confirm which you are being quoted. Cash dominates; ATMs in Freetown are limited and often out of service, so bring US dollars or euros.
