Singapore
A city-state that treats urban planning as a competitive sport.
“A city-state that treats urban planning as a competitive sport.”
Singapore gets written off as a sterile stopover by people who spent one night near the airport. Give it three days and it becomes one of the most interesting cities in Asia: a place that decided, deliberately and at considerable expense, to build a rainforest into its downtown, feed itself at government-run hawker centres, and preserve four cultures inside 730 square kilometres.
It is also genuinely expensive - the one country in Southeast Asia where a European budget does not stretch further. The workaround is the local one: eat at hawker centres where a superb meal costs €4, use the world-class metro, and spend money on exactly two things. The nature is free, the museums are cheap, and the rooftop bar is not.
Chapter 01
Highlights
Hawker centres
UNESCO-listed as intangible cultural heritage, and the reason to come hungry. Maxwell, Old Airport Road and Tiong Bahru; Hainanese chicken rice, char kway teow and laksa for €3–5 a plate.
Gardens by the Bay
The Supertree grove and two vast conservatories - the Cloud Forest with its indoor waterfall is worth the ticket. Free light show at the trees after dark.
The Southern Ridges and MacRitchie
Ten kilometres of canopy walkways and forest ridge across the south, and a treetop suspension bridge in the reservoir jungle with long-tailed macaques. Both free.
Kampong Glam, Little India and Chinatown
Three preserved quarters within a few metro stops - Arab Street's textile shops, the temple and mosque density of Little India, and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.

The detail
- Maximum stay
- up to 30 days
- Fee
- free entry
- Passport validity
- Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
- Onward travel
- Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
- Arrival form
- SG Arrival Card must be submitted online within three days before arrival - free, mandatory, and only through the official ICA portal.
- Health
- No vaccinations required. Dengue is endemic and the government runs active mosquito control - use repellent, especially around the green corridors. Tap water is safe to drink straight from the tap. Healthcare is world-class and priced accordingly; insurance is essential, since a hospital admission here costs European or American money.
- Money
- Contactless everywhere, including hawker stalls, which mostly take PayNow QR or cards now. ATMs are plentiful and many charge no local fee. Tipping is not practised; restaurants add 10 % service and 9 % GST. Tourists can reclaim GST on purchases over S$100 at the airport.
What changed
Singapore admits United States passports with no visa and no fee, and every arrival must submit the free SG Arrival Card in the three days before landing - the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority’s own site is the only place it costs nothing, and it doubles as the health declaration. This row stores 30 days, the shorter of two readings in circulation: a number of current listings place the United States on Singapore’s longer 90-day list alongside Germany, Switzerland, Norway and South Korea; the shorter figure is stored deliberately, because an overstay is a fine and a refused onward flight while a shorter plan costs nothing. Read the length actually granted on the electronic visit pass emailed after clearance, which is the only number Singapore enforces. A confirmed onward ticket, six months of passport validity and sufficient funds are all checked, at the gate rather more reliably than at the desk. Vaping is the rule Americans break without noticing: e-cigarettes are illegal to import, possess or use, they are confiscated and fined at the airport, and Singapore’s drug offences carry sentences up to and including death, with consumption abroad still prosecutable on arrival.

Driest month of the year; Chinese New Year fills the city.
The band above each month is our editorial verdict - it weighs crowds, prices and access as well as weather. The line is average daily temperature, the bars are monthly rainfall. Select a month for the figures. Climate figures: ERA5 reanalysis via Open-Meteo, 2005–2024 normals.

Where this sits among 244 countries we have costed
Hotels, not much else, drive the seasonality - and the driver is the events calendar rather than the weather. The Formula 1 weekend in September, Chinese New Year and the year-end holidays are when rates double or worse. Hawker food, transport and museum tickets are flat year-round.

Peranakan shophouses, the old airport hawker centre and a beachfront park that locals actually use.
Chapter 06
Practical guide
Getting there
Changi (SIN) is consistently rated the best airport in the world and is a major hub with direct flights from London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Istanbul and Manchester in 12–13 hours. The MRT reaches downtown in 45 minutes for under €2. Overland from Malaysia via the Woodlands or Tuas causeway is busy but routine; the Johor Bahru rail shuttle is the fastest option and sells out days ahead.
Entry formalities
SG Arrival Card must be submitted online within three days before arrival - free, mandatory, and only through the official ICA portal.
Getting around
The MRT is fast, cheap, clean and reaches almost everywhere; tap in with any contactless card or phone, no local card needed. Buses fill the gaps. Taxis and Grab are reasonable by European standards. The city is walkable in bursts but the humidity is relentless - plan around air-conditioned stretches and underground links. Cycling infrastructure is improving but this is not a cycling city.
Money & costs
Contactless everywhere, including hawker stalls, which mostly take PayNow QR or cards now. ATMs are plentiful and many charge no local fee. Tipping is not practised; restaurants add 10 % service and 9 % GST. Tourists can reclaim GST on purchases over S$100 at the airport.
Safety
One of the safest cities on earth - solo night walking is unremarkable and violent crime is very rare. The genuine risks are heat and humidity, which are constant, and the legal environment, which is strict and enforced. Penalties for drugs are the most severe in the world; do not carry anything for anyone. Vaping products are illegal to bring in.
Health
No vaccinations required. Dengue is endemic and the government runs active mosquito control - use repellent, especially around the green corridors. Tap water is safe to drink straight from the tap. Healthcare is world-class and priced accordingly; insurance is essential, since a hospital admission here costs European or American money.
SIM & internet
Free public wifi (Wireless@SG) is widespread and works. Tourist SIMs from Singtel, StarHub and M1 are €8–15; eSIM is easy. 5G coverage is complete, including underground on the MRT. Everything is app-mediated - Grab, hawker payment QR codes, museum bookings.
Chapter 07
Driving
Do not rent a car. Vehicle ownership costs are the highest in the world by design, parking is expensive, and the MRT goes everywhere. The only reason to drive here is to continue into Malaysia - and cross-border rental rules are restrictive.
Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.

Frequently asked questions
Is Singapore worth more than a stopover?
Three days, yes. One day is enough for Gardens by the Bay and a hawker centre; three lets you add the museums, the nature reserves, the ethnic quarters and a proper night out. Beyond four days the cost stops justifying itself unless you have a specific reason to stay.
What can actually get me fined?
The reputation is overstated but not invented. Chewing gum import is restricted, littering and jaywalking are fined, eating and drinking on the MRT carries a S$500 fine, and smoking is banned in most public places. Vaping is illegal to possess, use or import - that one catches travellers out regularly. Drug offences carry the death penalty, including for trafficking amounts that would be personal use elsewhere.
How do I keep the cost down?
Eat at hawker centres, drink tap water (it is safe and free), use the MRT, and stay in Chinatown or Geylang rather than Marina Bay. Alcohol is where budgets die - a beer in a bar is €10–14. The nature reserves, the ridges and most of the ethnic quarters cost nothing at all.
