“The only Pacific nation never colonised, and one of the few places you may swim with humpbacks.”

Tonga is the only Pacific island nation never brought under foreign rule, and it is still a kingdom - the monarchy retains real constitutional weight and Sunday observance is written into law, which means shops, flights and most activity stop entirely. Swimming and even some hotel services pause. Plan around it rather than fighting it.

The headline experience is swimming with humpback whales. Tonga is one of a small number of places where licensed operators may take snorkellers into the water with mothers and calves, in the Vava'u group from roughly July to October, and it is regulated closely. Beyond that: the Mapu'a 'a Vaea blowholes on Tongatapu firing spray along five kilometres of coast, the ancient Ha'amonga 'a Maui trilithon, and Ha'apai's low sand islands. The 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption and tsunami caused serious damage and reshaped the picture; recovery continues.

Chapter 01

Highlights

01

Swimming with humpback whales

From roughly July to October, licensed operators in Vava'u and Ha'apai take small groups into the water with humpback mothers and calves. Strictly regulated, weather-dependent, and unlike anything else in the Pacific.

02

Mapu'a 'a Vaea blowholes

On Tongatapu's south coast, seawater forces up through a terrace of coral rock and fires spray twenty metres into the air along about five kilometres of shoreline. Best on a swell.

03

Ha'amonga 'a Maui

A coral limestone trilithon on Tongatapu, raised around AD 1200, aligned with the solstices - the largest ancient stone structure in the Pacific and the ceremonial centre of the Tu'i Tonga empire.

04

Vava'u and Ha'apai

Vava'u's sheltered anchorages make it one of the Pacific's best sailing grounds; Ha'apai is flat, sandy, sparsely populated and the quietest group in the kingdom.

Tonga issues a visitor's visa to a United States passport on arrival at Fua'amotu, free and for 31 days, with nothing to apply for beforehand. The odd number is deliberate rather than a rounding of thirty, and it is extendable in country - the immigration office in Nuku'alofa grants further months, for a fee, up to a total of six, which makes Tonga one of the easier places in the Pacific to stay a while if the islands take hold of you. Carry the onward ticket and the first accommodation booking in a form you can show on a phone. Across the Pacific these are asked for far more consistently than in most of the world, and they are asked for by the AIRLINE at check-in rather than by Tonga at the door - a carrier that lands somebody in a country they have no way out of owns the cost of taking them home, so the refusal comes from a check-in agent hours before anyone official has looked at your passport. A yellow fever certificate is required if you have come from a country where the disease is present, and the threshold the International Health Regulations set is a transit of more than twelve hours in an airport of such a country rather than any transit at all - check it against the whole routing rather than the departure airport, because almost nothing in this part of the world is fewer than three flights. The thing to plan around is not the visa but the Sabbath. Sunday observance is written into Tongan law: commercial activity stops, most flights do not operate, shops and many services close, and a Sunday is not a day to have scheduled a departure, a transfer between island groups or anything that needs a business to be open. Build the itinerary around it and it is one of the most striking days you will spend anywhere; ignore it and it is a lost day at best. The other constraint is internal transport - domestic flights and ferries link Tongatapu, Ha'apai and Vava'u with reliability caveats on both, so leave slack before an international departure rather than connecting on the same day. The hazards here are natural rather than criminal: cyclones from November to April, earthquakes, volcanic activity and tsunami risk, so find out the evacuation route from wherever you are staying on the first evening.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

Fua'amotu near Nuku'alofa is served by Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways and Virgin Australia from Auckland, Nadi and Sydney. Lulutai Airlines flies domestically to Vava'u and Ha'apai.

Getting around

Domestic flights and ferries link the island groups, both with reliability caveats - build buffer days. Tongatapu has buses and hire cars. Within Vava'u, boats do most of the work.

Money & costs

The paʻanga in cash for most things; cards work at hotels and larger operators. ATMs in Nuku'alofa and Neiafu. Bring cash for Ha'apai and the outer islands.

Safety

Low crime. The hazards are natural - cyclones from November to April, earthquakes, volcanic activity and tsunami risk. Know the evacuation route from your accommodation. Rough water at reef passes and blowhole coasts.

Health

No malaria. Dengue outbreaks occur. Medical facilities are limited; evacuation to New Zealand for anything serious, and insurance must cover it. Non-communicable disease rates are high locally but this does not affect visitors.

SIM & internet

Digicel and Tonga Communications; SIMs at the airport. 4G in Nuku'alofa, Neiafu and the main centres. The single undersea cable has been severed more than once, taking the whole country offline for weeks.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

What actually closes on Sunday?

Almost everything. Shops, restaurants outside hotels, domestic flights and most commercial activity are prohibited by law. Swimming is discouraged in some villages. Church, on the other hand, is worth attending for the singing alone - visitors are welcomed if dressed respectfully.

How do I book a whale swim responsibly?

Use a licensed operator - the number of permits is capped and the rules on approach distance, group size and time in the water are enforced. Season runs roughly July to October in Vava'u. Operators book out months ahead in August and September.

What is the situation after the 2022 eruption?

The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai eruption and tsunami in January 2022 killed people, destroyed villages on some islands and severed the undersea cable for weeks. Reconstruction has progressed and tourism has resumed, but some outer-island infrastructure has not fully recovered - confirm directly with accommodation before booking.
