Turkmenistan
A white marble capital, a burning gas crater, and one of the hardest visas on earth.
“A white marble capital, a burning gas crater, and one of the hardest visas on earth.”
Turkmenistan is the most restrictive country in Central Asia and one of the most closed anywhere. Tourist visas require a letter of invitation from a licensed agency, a booked and approved itinerary and a guide; the alternative is a five-day transit visa, granted at the discretion of a consulate that refuses more applications than it accepts. Neither route is quick and both fail regularly.
What is on the other side is genuinely singular. Ashgabat is a capital of white marble and gold domes built at enormous cost on the edge of the Karakum desert, holding a world record for marble-clad buildings. The Darvaza gas crater has been burning since a Soviet drilling accident. Merv and Konye-Urgench are vast, empty Silk Road ruins. It is a strange, difficult and unforgettable place to visit - for the very small number who manage it.
Chapter 01
Highlights
The Darvaza gas crater
A 70-metre crater in the Karakum desert that has burned since a Soviet drilling collapse, best seen from a desert camp at night. The government has announced plans to extinguish it more than once.
Ashgabat
A capital rebuilt in white marble with gold-domed ministries, vast empty boulevards and monuments to the presidency. Photography is restricted - ask your guide before raising a camera.
Merv
One of the largest archaeological sites in Central Asia - a Silk Road metropolis of successive walled cities on the desert plain near Mary, destroyed by the Mongols in 1221.
Konye-Urgench
The former Khorezm capital in the north, with the tallest minaret in Central Asia and mausoleums standing in open desert.

The detail
- Maximum stay
- up to 21 days
- Process
- embassy application
- Fee
- €90 / $97
- Processing time
- Processing takes 21–45 days - apply with room to spare.
- Passport validity
- Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
- Onward travel
- Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
- Arrival form
- Letter of invitation and approved itinerary from your licensed agency, plus a visa collected at the border or embassy and a migration card.
- Health
- Hepatitis A and typhoid standard. Medical facilities are limited and the reliability of the health system is difficult to assess from outside - evacuation cover is essential. Do not drink tap water. Summer temperatures exceed 45 °C in the Karakum and heat illness is the most likely problem for visitors.
- Money
- The manat has an official rate and a substantially different street rate, and the gap has been wide for years. Bring US dollars in cash - international cards do not reliably work and ATMs are unreliable for foreign cards. Your agency will handle most payments. Currency declaration on entry is taken seriously.
Turkmenistan is among the hardest visas in the world to obtain, and the visa is not the gate - the LETTER OF INVITATION is. A licensed Turkmen agency applies to the State Migration Service on your behalf for an invitation covering a specific, approved itinerary with named dates; three to six weeks later it is granted or it is not, with no reason given and no appeal. Only then is a visa issued, at a consulate or on arrival against the letter, paid in US dollars in cash at a counter that does not take cards. Without an invitation there is nothing to apply for. A guide accompanies you throughout the trip - that is the condition of the tourist visa rather than an upsell - and the itinerary you were approved for is the itinerary you travel. The alternative is a three- to five-day TRANSIT VISA, applied for at a consulate with the visa for the next country already in your passport, valid for a fixed route you may not deviate from; it is refused at least as often as it is granted and there is no way to ask why. The stored figures here are an approximation rather than a tariff: the consular fee, the agency's charge and the arrival fee are three different numbers, quoted in dollars, and a guided week costs a multiple of any of them. Twenty-one days is a typical issue. The passport should be valid six months. Currency must be declared on entry, registration with the migration service is required for stays beyond a few days and is handled by the agency, and photography near government buildings, airports and borders is genuinely restricted rather than merely discouraged. Central Asia is not one visa area. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan each answer for themselves, the answers differ by weeks of allowance and by whether anything has to be bought at all, and every border between them is an ordinary international crossing with its own queue, its own opening hours and its own list of who may use it. A joint regional visa on the Schengen model has been announced more than once; at the time of writing none can be bought, so plan each country's entry separately and check the specific crossing rather than the region.

Where this sits among 244 countries we have costed
There is no meaningful seasonal pricing - visitor numbers are tiny and rates are set by a handful of licensed agencies. What varies is the visa outcome, not the price. Note that the official and street exchange rates for the manat have diverged widely for years, so any figure quoted in local currency is ambiguous; these are agency prices in hard currency.

Chapter 06
Practical guide
Getting there
Ashgabat (ASB) takes a small number of flights from Istanbul, Dubai, Moscow and Frankfurt, with Turkmenistan Airlines the main carrier and schedules subject to change. Overland entry is possible from Iran, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan and by ferry across the Caspian from Baku to Turkmenbashi, which runs on no reliable schedule at all.
Entry formalities
Letter of invitation and approved itinerary from your licensed agency, plus a visa collected at the border or embassy and a migration card.
Getting around
On a tourist visa, by the vehicle and driver your agency provides on your approved itinerary. Domestic flights link Ashgabat with Mary, Turkmenabat and Dashoguz cheaply. Roads between cities cross desert and are of variable quality. On a transit visa you travel by shared taxi or hired car along your permitted route, which is watched.
Money & costs
The manat has an official rate and a substantially different street rate, and the gap has been wide for years. Bring US dollars in cash - international cards do not reliably work and ATMs are unreliable for foreign cards. Your agency will handle most payments. Currency declaration on entry is taken seriously.
Safety
Street crime is very low. The constraints are political: extensive surveillance, restrictions on photography around government buildings, checkpoints between provinces, and a legal system with no meaningful recourse for foreigners. Do not photograph officials, ministries, airports or border areas. Discussion of politics can create difficulties for the Turkmen citizens you talk to, not only for you. Desert heat in summer is genuinely dangerous.
Health
Hepatitis A and typhoid standard. Medical facilities are limited and the reliability of the health system is difficult to assess from outside - evacuation cover is essential. Do not drink tap water. Summer temperatures exceed 45 °C in the Karakum and heat illness is the most likely problem for visitors.
SIM & internet
Internet access is among the most restricted in the world - most international platforms including social media and messaging apps are blocked, and VPN use is actively suppressed. Local SIMs are difficult for foreigners to obtain. Assume you will be effectively offline and that anything you do send is monitored.
Chapter 07
Driving
Cars in Ashgabat must be kept clean - dirty vehicles have been fined - and black cars have at times been restricted in favour of white ones. This is not a joke; it is the kind of rule that governs daily life here.

Frequently asked questions
How do I actually get a visa?
Two routes. A tourist visa requires a licensed Turkmen agency to obtain a letter of invitation for your specific itinerary, which takes three to six weeks and can be refused without explanation; you then travel with a guide throughout. A transit visa allows three to five days to cross the country between two neighbours, is applied for at a consulate and is refused at least as often as granted. Neither can be rushed.
Can I travel independently?
Only on a transit visa, and then only along an approved route between your entry and exit points, within the days granted. On a tourist visa a guide accompanies you. There is no version of this country you can wander around.
Is the gas crater still burning?
It was as of recent reports, but the government has repeatedly announced intentions to extinguish it, citing environmental and economic reasons, and has taken partial steps. If it is the reason for your trip, check recent traveller accounts rather than older articles before committing.
