Zimbabwe holds about three-quarters of the Victoria Falls frontage, which means the panoramic view - the one on the postcards - is from the Zimbabwean side. It also has Hwange's elephant herds, Mana Pools where you are allowed to walk unguided if you know what you are doing, and Great Zimbabwe, the stone city that gave the country its name and that colonial archaeology spent decades trying to attribute to anyone else.
The professional guide qualification here is the hardest in Africa and it shows: a Zimbabwean guide will read tracks and behaviour at a level you rarely encounter elsewhere. The economy has been through hyperinflation, currency collapses and repeated redenominations, and the practical consequence for a visitor is that US dollars are the working currency and cash matters. Fuel shortages and power cuts still happen; lodges run generators.

Victoria Falls
The Zimbabwean side holds most of the frontage and the full-length rainforest walk facing the drop. Add the gorge swing, the Batoka rafting run below and sunset on the upper Zambezi.
Mana Pools
A UNESCO site on the Zambezi floodplain where walking among elephant, buffalo and wild dog is the point. One of very few African parks where experienced visitors may walk unaccompanied.
Hwange National Park
Zimbabwe's largest park and home to one of the biggest elephant populations in Africa. In the late dry season hundreds gather at pumped waterholes, watchable from hides at close range.
Great Zimbabwe
The stone capital of a trading empire that peaked around the fourteenth century - the Great Enclosure's dry-stone wall runs 250 metres with no mortar at all. The country's namesake and its most important site.

Zimbabwe issues its visa at the border to an American passport - US$30 single entry, US$45 double entry, and the single entry is what almost every visitor buys. It is paid in United States dollar cash and the notes must be clean, unmarked and reasonably recent; the counters at Victoria Falls, Harare and the land crossings do not reliably take cards and often cannot give change in dollars, so arrive with the exact sum and with small notes. An e-visa on the government portal covers the same visit at the same price and does not replace the counter so much as shorten it, which at the Victoria Falls land border on a busy morning is worth the twenty minutes the application takes. The document that repays reading twice is the KAZA UniVisa: US$50 for thirty days across both Zimbabwe and Zambia, with day trips into Botswana at Kazungula included, which for anyone doing both sides of the falls costs less than two single entries. It is issued only at the counter - Victoria Falls airport and land border, Harare, Kazungula, and the Zambian posts at Livingstone and Lusaka - never online and never in advance, and it has been suspended and restored more than once since it began, so ask for it at the desk, accept that it may not be on offer that day, and carry enough dollars to buy an ordinary single entry on each side instead. The stamp is usually written for thirty days and can be extended at an immigration office to a maximum of ninety. A yellow fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a country where the disease is endemic.

Practical guide
Getting there
Victoria Falls Airport takes regional flights from Johannesburg, Nairobi and Addis plus seasonal wide-bodies; Harare is the other gateway. Many visitors arrive overland from Livingstone across the falls bridge or from Botswana at Kazungula.
Getting around
Self-drive on the main tarmac routes is realistic and common. Fastjet flies Harare–Victoria Falls–Bulawayo. Inter-city coaches connect the main towns. Mana Pools needs a proper 4x4 or a fly-in.
Money & costs
Bring US dollars in cash - this is not optional advice. Small notes are gold because change is scarce. Cards work at the better lodges and in Victoria Falls town; assume they will not elsewhere.
Safety
Low crime against tourists. Roadblocks are frequent; be polite, have papers ready and decline informal payments calmly. Power cuts are routine. Do not swim in the Zambezi - crocodiles, and not hypothetically.

Left-hand traffic. Cars must carry two reflective triangles and reflective tape front and rear - police check for these specifically and fine for their absence. Fuel availability has improved but carry a reserve on long legs.

What money should I bring?
US dollars in cash, in good condition, in a mix of small denominations. The Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) launched in 2024 is the official currency but the US dollar does most of the work in tourism. ATMs are unreliable and often empty; card acceptance is limited to larger lodges and hotels. Change is frequently given in small US notes or goods.
Zimbabwe or Zambia for Victoria Falls?
Zimbabwe for the view - around three-quarters of the frontage and the panoramic rainforest walk. Zambia for Devil's Pool and generally lower prices. The bridge between them takes fifteen minutes to walk, and the KAZA UniVisa covers both, so most people simply do both sides in a single trip.
Is it safe, given the political history?
For travellers, yes. Violent crime against visitors is rare and the tourism areas are well run. The realistic frictions are economic: fuel shortages, power cuts, cash scarcity and occasional demands for informal payments at roadblocks. Avoid political demonstrations and do not photograph government buildings or police.
