The largest and least-visited country in Central America: León’s revolutionary murals and volcano boarding, Granada on the lake, the twin cones of Ometepe, and a Pacific coast that is still mostly empty.

Day
01

León

LeónGetting here: Arrival flight + shuttleStay: León colonial guesthouse

In from Managua and straight north-west. León is the university city, the liberal counterweight to Granada, and the site of the largest cathedral in Central America - UNESCO-listed, with a white roof you walk barefoot across for the volcano line on the horizon.

02

Murals and Cerro Negro

Cerro NegroGetting here: 4x4 from LeónStay: León colonial guesthouse

The revolution murals through the centre in the morning; in the afternoon, Cerro Negro - a black cinder cone that first erupted in 1850 and is climbed in an hour so that you can descend it on a plywood board at unreasonable speed.

03

Las Peñitas and the estuary

Las PeñitasGetting here: Local busStay: León colonial guesthouse

Twenty minutes to the Pacific for a black-sand beach with serious surf and a mangrove estuary at Juan Venado that is a turtle nesting site. A quiet day between two volcano days.

Shuttle via Masaya
Day
04

Masaya and Granada

Masaya VolcanoGetting here: Shuttle via MasayaStay: Granada colonial hotel

South via the Masaya volcano, where a road runs to a crater rim above an open lava lake - one of very few places on earth where you can look directly at moving magma. Best after dark. Then on to Granada on the lake shore.

Day
05

Granada

GranadaStay: Granada colonial hotel

Pastel single-storey houses around interior courtyards, the yellow cathedral, and Las Isletas - 365 small islands in the lake, thrown there when Mombacho blew its side out, best seen by kayak rather than by tour boat.

06

Mombacho and the coffee slope

MombachoGetting here: Park truckStay: Granada colonial hotel

The cloud forest on the volcano above Granada, reached by an old military truck up a road at an angle that concentrates the mind. Orchids, howler monkeys and a crater trail - plus coffee farms on the lower slopes.

Bus + ferry
Day
07

To Ometepe

OmetepeGetting here: Bus + ferryStay: Ometepe finca lodge

South to San Jorge and the ferry across Lake Nicaragua to the island formed by two volcanoes joined at the waist. The crossing takes an hour and the lake has genuine waves.

Day
08

Maderas or the petroglyphs

MaderasStay: Ometepe finca lodge

Maderas is the extinct cone - cloud forest, mud, and a crater lake you can swim in after a hard five-hour climb. The gentler day: pre-Columbian petroglyphs on basalt boulders around Altagracia, and the Ojo de Agua spring.

Day
09

The island at its own pace

OmetepeStay: Ometepe finca lodge

Rent a scooter and circle Concepción, or take a kayak into the Río Istián channel between the volcanoes at dawn for caimans and turtles. Plantain fields, howler monkeys, and almost no traffic.

Ferry + bus
Day
10

The Pacific coast

San Juan del SurGetting here: Ferry + busStay: San Juan del Sur guesthouse

Back to the mainland and west to San Juan del Sur and the beaches north and south of it - Maderas, Marsella, Remanso. Consistent surf, sunsets, and a town that empties out midweek.

Bus + departure flight
Day
11

Out

ManaguaGetting here: Bus + departure flight

Two and a half hours back to Managua for the flight. If you have a spare day instead, the Somoto canyon in the far north is the best half-day in the country - swimming and scrambling through a slot cut by the Coco river.

Good to know

Check your government’s current travel advice before booking. Ordinary travel functions and most of the country is calm, but the political situation since 2018 is not normal and advisories change.

Photographing government buildings, police or protests carries real risk - for the Nicaraguans nearby more than for you. Political conversations should be led by the local person, never by the visitor.

Masaya’s crater access closes without notice when gas levels rise. Ometepe ferries stop in high wind.

Shorter or longer?

1 week

Granada, Masaya and Ometepe only, flying in and out of Managua.

+ Corn Islands

Add four days on the Caribbean side - a flight to Bluefields or Big Corn, reef and Creole cooking.

+ Río San Juan

Boat down the river from San Carlos to the Spanish fortress at El Castillo and the Indio Maíz rainforest.
