Driving in Albania

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

40 / 80 / 110 km/h · 25 / 50 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended · Both accepted

EU licences are accepted; an IDP is advisable with others and police checks are frequent.

Blood alcohol limit

0.01% - effectively zero tolerance

Tolls

A toll applies on the Milot–Morinë highway toward Kosovo; other roads are free.

Headlights

Mandatory at all times, day and night, year-round.

Child seats

Required for young children, though enforcement and availability are limited.

Driving standards are the country's main hazard - overtaking on blind bends is normal and rural roads carry livestock and unlit vehicles. Avoid driving at night outside the main corridors. A green card is needed for foreign vehicles and many EU rental agreements exclude Albania entirely.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
