Speed limits

60 / 110 / 130 km/h · 37 / 68 / 81 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended · Geneva 1949

EU licences are widely accepted for tourist rentals, but police at provincial checkpoints may ask for the IDP - carry both.

Blood alcohol limit

0.0% on national routes (Alcohol Cero law, 2023) · a few provinces still 0.05%

Tolls

Cash and TelePASE toll booths on the autopistas around Buenos Aires and main intercity corridors; rural Patagonian routes are toll-free.

Headlights

Low beams mandatory 24/7 on national routes - police checkpoints do fine for it.

Child seats

Children under 10 must ride in the back with an age-appropriate restraint; rentals stock seats on request.

Distances are enormous - Buenos Aires to El Calafate is 2,700 km. Fuel stations on Ruta 40 can be 300+ km apart; fill at every opportunity in Patagonia and mind guanacos at dusk.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
