Driving in Belize

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

25 / 55 / 55 mph · 40 / 89 / 89 km/h

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

A home-country licence is accepted for visits up to 3 months; carry it with your passport. An IDP helps only as a translation if your licence has no Latin script.

Blood alcohol limit

0.08 % - enforced with checkpoints around holidays

Tolls

No toll roads. The hand-cranked river ferries on back roads (e.g. to Xunantunich) are free.

Headlights

Required after dark and in rain; no daytime running requirement for cars.

Child seats

No strictly enforced child-restraint law - bring your own seat or reserve one ahead; rental agencies stock a few.

Belize posts speeds in mph - the only country on the isthmus that does. There are no motorways; 55 mph is the open-highway maximum. Unsigned speed bumps ("sleeping policemen") guard every village: hit one at speed and the rental deposit is gone.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
