Belize is Central America running on Caribbean time. English is the official language, the barrier reef runs the entire length of the coast, and the whole country holds fewer people than a mid-sized European city. You can wake up in a jungle lodge beside a Maya plaza and be snorkelling a coral wall by mid-afternoon.
It is also, honestly, the priciest corner of the isthmus after Costa Rica — the trade-off for small scale and easy logistics. The smart play is to split time between the Cayo district inland (caves, ruins, rivers) and one of the cayes, and to travel like locals do: chicken bus, water taxi, and no hurry whatsoever.

5The northern cayes
Caye Caulker’s barefoot sand streets and Ambergris Caye’s upscale San Pedro — both a short boat from the reef, Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley.
Cayo district
San Ignacio is the inland base: ATM cave, Xunantunich and Caracol ruins, river canoeing and jungle lodges on the Macal River.
Southern coast — Placencia & Hopkins
Peninsula beaches, Garifuna drumming in Hopkins, and whale-shark diving off Gladden Spit in spring. The mellow alternative to the northern cayes.
Toledo & the deep south
Punta Gorda, rainforest waterfalls, cacao farms and living Maya villages — the least-visited district and the greenest.
The north — Orange Walk & Lamanai

Getting there
Philip S. W. Goldson International (BZE) outside Belize City has direct links to US hubs (Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta) — from Europe count on one stop, 14–17 hours door to door. The budget classic is flying into Cancún and riding ADO buses south (8–10 h to the border, cheap and comfortable). A water taxi also crosses from Chetumal, Mexico straight to the cayes.
Getting around
The country is tiny — no internal journey needs more than half a day. Old US school buses run the main highways for pocket change; water taxis (San Pedro Belize Express, Ocean Ferry) link Belize City, Caye Caulker and San Pedro roughly hourly. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air hop between airstrips in 20-minute flights that double as scenic tours. Golf carts are the rental car of the islands.

SIM & internet
Digi (the former BTL) has the widest coverage, Smart the cheaper packages — data is pricier than elsewhere in the region, roughly €10 for 10 GB prepaid. An eSIM installed before arrival is the painless option. 4G covers the cayes and the highway corridors; the deep south and the Chiquibul are dead zones.
Driving
Belize posts speeds in mph — the only country on the isthmus that does. There are no motorways; 55 mph is the open-highway maximum. Unsigned speed bumps ("sleeping policemen") guard every village: hit one at speed and the rental deposit is gone.

Is Belize safe for travellers?
The tourist circuit — the cayes, Cayo district, Placencia, Hopkins — is relaxed and easy. The exception is Belize City, where the south side has genuine gang crime: treat the city as a transit point, take a taxi between the bus terminal and the water-taxi dock, and don’t wander at night. Petty theft exists island-side; use lockers.
When is the best time to visit Belize?
December to April is the dry season — sunny, breezy, and busiest around Christmas and Easter. September and October are the wet-season trough and the heart of hurricane season, when some island businesses close entirely. June brings the lobster-season openings, and whale sharks pass Placencia around the full moons of April to June.
How much does a day in Belize cost?
More than its neighbours: around €90 ($97) per day mid-range — €40–50 for your half of a double room, €20–25 for food, the rest for boats and reef trips. Backpackers can hold €40–45 ($43–49) on Caye Caulker with dorms and street food; a single dive or cave tour blows any daily budget, so ring-fence activity money separately.
